What lies beneath

Helsinki, 3 degrees

It's strange how my office sometimes really does tell a lot about current issues in the world. Today a Swedish older lady came in, and after had asked a perfectly random quesiton and got the answer to it, she started telling me about how she despises the fact that companies and people want to show off money when they in reality don't actually have them. She was angry because the Finnish interior brand Marimekko has opened a new brand store in Stockholm, apparently in a posh shopping center with only luxiurious brands. According to her this is wrong by Marimekko since she didn't think it belonged to the high fashion brands. What do you think?

When I tried to tell her that maybe Marimekko is trying to position themselves in a new way in Stockholm, she didn't want to listen to me. I guess some people are not ready to receive any kind of critisism. At some point, her arguments were so funny that I laughed almost straight at her face, but I just had to, since she really didn't make any sense.

She also babbled about Nordea's bank owner Björn Wahlroos, how Sweeds detest that he has bought expensive apartments in Stockholm and renewed some bank offices despite the economic situation we all find ourselves in. I don't know how much you know about Sweeds but usually, at least at our office, they do not talk about feeling bad but merely give a postitive impression about most of things. Therefore it really struck me as odd that this lady opened up this much. I guess the economic situation of Europe is really starting to show. Have you noticed any signs of it in your country? Do you think it's wrong that some people keep on consuming even though others don't dare or have the possibility to buy anything right now due to economic difficulties?

Sorry to bring up such depressive things, but I thought I needed to share this with you.

As for less deep thoughts, I thought I would ask you opinion on a dress that I saw today. What do you think about Miley Cyrus' Roberto Cavalli dress?

Even though it is quite revealing, I love the hairdo and the jewelry! Even the color of the dress is beautiful if you ask me.

  8. Personally, I'm not crazy about Miley's dress, I just think it's too booby! On someone else I think I'd like it more.

That old Swedish lady sounds like a nightmare. I hate having to deal with people who think they're right and won't listen to anything else. Good for you for trying to talk to her anyway!
