Cleaning Day

Helsinki, 8 degrees

If the whole world were put into one scale, and my mother in the other, the whole world would kick the beam.

This spring Saturday Helsinki turned into one big flea market when the city celebrated its first Cleaning Day (Siivouspäivä)! Anyone could sell or donate their furniture, clothes, gadgets and more, right on the street, and shop new ones from their neighbors. During this neat day one could also sell anything self-made.

This time, since it was the first time it was organized and I already had program scheduled for the afternoon, I decided to only participate as a buyer, and not as a seller. Next time though, it would be nice to be one of the sellers. I must say that I found some wonderful pieces of clothing á max €6, one pair of shoes €5, a necklace €2 and a bag €5. Incredible! I'll show you off the bargains I made in later posts.

I absolutely love flea markets - the crowded atmosphere, the communication among sellers and buyers, the thought of somebody's trash being somebody else's treasure. How about you? Do you attend flea markets often?

My afternoon was spent making a road-trip to Porvoo, a city located one hour East of Helsinki. The reason we headed there was that my better half became a godfather today to the son of his best friend. Road-trips are the best if you ask me, especially when you're on it with good company!

My tomorrow will be spent, as tradition, with my mom since it's Mother's Day. I'm really looking forward to spending some time with her tomorrow.

How will you spend the weekend?

What's your opinion?

  1. This looks like so much fun! It sounds like you picked up some amazing stuff as well! What a lovely way to spend the day. :)
