May Day "Vappu" 2012

Helsinki, 11 degrees

You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming.

Vappu, our Walpurgis celebration, was no disappointment! This year we had a record warm Vappu and tens of thousands gathered around the Havis Amanda statue that symbolizes Helsinki. This photo of the center of Helsinki yesterday fills me with so much joy as I understand the eager and happiness of my fellow Helsinkians.

The most well known Esplanade, the Esplanade Park, next to my workplace was packed with people! And finally beautiful Havis Amanda got her graduation hat on.

I stayed at home yesterday with my special someone, and had a picnic in our living room! Today, on the other hand, I spent the day with a dear friend.

We first went champagne brunching to one of the oldest cafés in Helsinki called Fazer café, and then took a walk to the biggest park, called Kaivopuisto, in the downtown area of Helsinki to have a couple of drinks at bar Mattolaituri while enjoying the superb weather.

I've always had a soft spot for sailing boats, so I loved that we passed them on the way to the bar.

Lately, I've been feeling lost in the sense that I feel that I have less goals nowadays in my life, compared to e.g. study times, but today made me feel much better. The company of a good friend can truly help you when you're feeling down!

On the way back to the city center, we passed by this funny looking sauna truck! I've mentioned our national sauna love before, but I definitely think there aren't many of this kind of trucks in the world! Only a few people would have the courage to enjoy sauna right in front of other people like this, or what do you think?

Despite the fact that Vappu occurred this year on Monday-Tuesday, and that will make the rest of the week feel difficult at work, I definitely needed this celebration! I feel this spring is getting constantly better and the upcoming summer is giving me energy already!

Happy spring everybody! My graduation hat, since it seems like a sailor hat, always reminds me of Christina Aguilera's Candyman video, so I'll let you enjoy it if you feel like it!
