Linnanmäki Amusement Park

Helsinki, 18 degrees

There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds.

The answer to my question is of course Helsinki's number 1 attraction with over one million visitors a year - Linnanmäki amusement park! An annual highlight is when one of my friends who lives in Australia comes back home with her family, and seeing as she is here now, this time we decided to spend a summery Tuesday together at the amusement park. I must admit, even though we went with my boyfriend in the beginning of June to Tivoli in Copenhagen, I'm not really an amusement park goer. I mean, like everyone else, I used to go to Linnanmäki many times a year as a child, but lately I've gone once a year at the top. This time it had actually been two summers since I had been there, but I can tell you I liked it a lot!

I dared to go to most of the rides I had the time to go to, except the ones where I would have hanged with my head downward, so I was proud of that. Having been to some parks in Italy, Sweden and Denmark and being able to compare it with those, I must say, I'm very proud of Linnanmäki! It's my favorite among them all since it has this unique feel to it due to its compact form!

Like you saw from my earlier post, cotton candy is a must when one visits Linnanmäki, but I think the meter-long-liquorice is another as well!

This year's novelty at Linnanmäki, meaning in English literally Castle Hill, is the cuisine world Kattila (in English: the pot) with six different restaurants under one roof! Since I love food, this was definately the one thing I wanted to see the most this year at the park. The restaurants offer everything from Finnish food and meatballs to sushi and Greek hamburgers, and I think they are of high standard for being in an amusement park. In fact, the blog Dobbernationloves even says: "I do think it is safe to say that with the arrival of Kattila, Helsiniki’s Linnanmaki offers the highest quality dining experience at any theme park, the world over."

How important is the food for you when you visit a theme / amusement park?

My favorite time of the year to visit Linnanmäki is in the fall actually when it organizes the so called Carnival of Lights. Since the evenings at that time are already a little bit darker, the rides are beautifully lit and one can actually see the light thanks to the darkness. The magical atmosphere at Linnanmäki is so tangible at that time!
