French twist

Helsinki, 19 degrees

Come on let's twist again like we did last summer!

What is a better way to spend a cloudy Saturday like this one than to try some summery hairstyles I found in Marie Claire  magazine? Since it's the season for a lot of outdoor events like BBQs and festivals, one needs a hairdo that can stand the warm summer weather. This week we've had days of about 25 degrees, but it seems we're back at humid weather conditions again. I'm not going to let that worry me since I think these hairdos are perfect for any weather! I wanted to share with you these step-by-step lessons on how to create three easy summer hairstyles, inspired by looks straight off the runway.

Brainded Bun
Inspiration: Valentino Spring 2012

First, choose a part of you hair —  it can be in the middle or off to one side. Then take a triangle-shaped section of hair right behind the ear on each side using a comb. Beginning with one side, start doing a breaid, e.g. French braid (take a section, overlap it with some loose hair, and braid it), continuing all the way down.

Once you've finished one side, secure the braid with a rubber band. If you want the style to be more relaxed, a little loose and less fussy, you can pull out small bits of hair while you're braiding.

With the free section of hair in the back, make a smaller regular braid. Take the two larger French braids and twist them into a messy bun, securing them with pins, leaving the regular braid still hanging.

Here's how the French braids should somwhat look once you've wrapped them around each other. Pull the remaining skinny braid around the outside of the bun that you made with the larger braids.

As a finishing touch, secure any fly-aways with pins. And voilà - the final look!

Haphazard Half-Up
Inspiration: Rodarte Spring 2012

Begin by teasing a few front sections of the hair to give it a little structure and height on top. Pull the hair from the top of the head, leaving most of it down by your ears.

Then separate the hair you gathered into two sections. One will go under the other — secure this section with some pins. After this step, the hair should look like a crisscross.

Now, you should twist both sections together, one on top of the other. Pin them up — it should look messy. You can play with the style: Twist the two pieces in a number of ways so that it looks unique. Secure these twists with hair pins.

Don't take too much hair to make the twists — most of it should fall down by your ears. And here's an example of the finished hairdo!

Unfussy French Twist
Inspiration: Louis Vuitton Spring 2012

Gather all your hair on one side. You can put hair pins in to secure it, starting at the nape of your neck. Then grab all of the hair in one hand. Put your thumb in the middle to make it easier to twist it inward.

Secure the twist with pins, starting at the bottom and moving upward. The more hair you have, the more of a challenge this will be.

Take the extra hair remaining and wrap it around the twist, securing these fly-aways with hair pins and some spray. Don't worry — it should look haphazard and messy so the more relaxed it looks, the better! At the very end, make sure you've left some hair out so that it looks unfussy.

I of course had to try the most difficult one out of these hairdos and tried to make a unfussy French twist. Since I did it by myself, it's far for perfect, but I liked the result. I used a hair spray that gave it a pastel nuance. What do you think? Since I have a lot of hair, it was way trickier than I thought, but it was worth it!

Would you try one of these hairdos?
