White home inspiration

Helsinki, 6 degrees

Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration.

Weekends are amazing in the sense that they are true battery chargers for me. This Saturday we continued to decorate our home. I finally got a lantern for our balcony, yey! I'll show it to you in a future blog post. In the meantime I wanted to share you these inspirational photos of an apartment in Milan, a city that I love almost as much as my beloved Helsinki, due to the fact that I've lived in Milan and its vicinity for two years. These photos I found in Italian Marie Claire. I thought these photos were breathtaking, but even more so the fact that such a luminous apartment exists in Milan, since I never saw a home like this when I lived there. It looks more Nordic, don't you think? I think this home is a breeze of fresh air with its spacious and light interior design.

Can you believe that this home looks like this from the outside? Talk about a contrast! I love that some Italian characteristics have been kept while planning this home.

My absolute personal favorite feature about this apartment is the photo collage in the bedroom since it's similar to the one I have carried out in our bedroom. What do you think about it? Have I done a good job?

I also plan to make one in our living room but that will be different since it will be created on top of two shelves, I'll show you photos of it when it's all done and ready, right now the collage in the living room is still in process.

I dream of a big chandelier, but right now I'm happy with the table lamp with crystals that we got some time ago. You can read about in my post here.

I also love the living room table in these photos, isn't it amazing? It has such a rustic feel to it..but like I've mentioned before we have tried to vary with the colors in our living room, having black, white and dark grey/silver items. I think the apartment in Milan that you see in these photos is a little bit too white for my taste. Do you think an apartment can be too white?

Hey, today it's exactly one month until Christmas Eve! I thought it would be a nice idea to tell you something about Finnish Christmas in each blog post until Christmas Eve, what would you think about that? Kind of like my very own Christmas Calendar?

Here's the first one:

The Christmas Calendar

The Christmas Calendar idea was brought to Finland by Teresita Fazer back in 1947. She had seen an advent calendar in Sweden and told about it to the Finnish Scout Association. Ulla con Wendt designed the first Finnish advent calendar, made out of paper, that had the form of a gingerbread house. By 1949 the calendar had become widely popular. In the beginning the calendar always had the form or a gingerbread house and the windows functioned as "hatches" for each day, all revealing a picture. Chocolate was added to the calendars much later. The first Finnish chocolate Christmas Calender was sold by Fazer only in the beginning of the 21st century. Before that, in the 80's, Fazer brought calendars with sweets to the market.

I still believe that the Christmas Calendar by the Finnish Scouts is essential to Finnish Christmas. This year, even the Helsinki City Museum has made an amazing Christmas Calendar describing Finnish Christmas traditions. I might just have to buy both of them!

Do you have a Christmas calendar? Do you prefer chocolate calendars or paper ones?

What's your opinion?

  1. You lived in Milan, wow, that must have been amazing! Were you working there. I like the bright airiness of this apartment, I think I'd maybe like to add a few more pastel tones.

    1. Yes, that was an amazing time that I will cherish for the rest of my life! You can actually read about my last long term stay there on my blog, since I was already writing on my blog then :) It started in April 2009, but that was close by to Venice.
I've lived in Milan and its vicinity for work and study exchange.

when it comes to the apartment in Milan I have to say the all-white variant is not for me. I like those lilac and pink accents though. and the collage in your bedroom is so cool! I like it very much! and actually tomorrow I and my fiance plan to order maybe A3 size photos of my macro shots to decorate our dining and living room.

  6. Those are gorgeous pictures! I feel like it would be very difficult to keep and all-white apartment, though it is very beautiful. I prefer having chocolate calenders, because chocolate is good and I like finding the box to open the chocolate!
