New Year's Eve 2012

The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective.

Some people say that New Year's Eve is overrated. That it's just a day like any other. I guess that in reality they're right, but I am a strong believer in that things are what you make out of them. So if you make New Year's Eve into a day with a special meaning for you, it will be exactly that. Like I mentioned in my previous post, for me New Year's Eve stands for reflection and closure. I actually enjoy taking some time to think about what I have gone through during the year. It doesn't necessarily mean that everything gets done in time for the new year to change but I think it's as good as any occasion for reflection. I've actually played around with the thought that these moments of reflection should happen way more often than they do right now. I guess that is my one true new year's resolution. To take time. How do you feel about new year's resolution, yey or nay? I also would also like to make some time to plan more. I plan things way to little. Any hints on how do organize one's life better?

I enjoyed New Year's Eve at home with my boy. We had decided to stay in quite a time ago, since we both wanted to honor our new home. Like I mentioned before, the menu's big superstar was the lobster! Having had it now twice for New Year's Eve, I guess it's becoming our very own tradition...

I finally got to wear the dress I got from my lovely boy for Christmas. I'm really in love with this evening dress that has a round neckline, multi color jewel embellished design and contrast sequin detail!

I combined the decorative and embellished dress to a simple hairdo I've been wanting to try for some time now: slicked back hair that is. I've been seeing it around for some time now so I had been waiting for the right occasion for it.

Seeing as we live in an apartment building with a stunning amoung of 14 floors, we went up to the rooftop for the New Year countdown and exchanged kisses over champagne. It couldn't have been more romantic or more perfect if you ask me! Where were you when the clock turned twelve?

Later, we returned back home to continue with the tradition of casting tin. Casting tin is when everyone gets a small piece of tin, cast in the shape of a miniature horseshoe, a traditional symbol of good luck. The horseshoe is then melted over a hot stove and the liquid metal poured quickly in a bucket of cold water while shouting the person in question's name, making it harden into a more or less irregular-shaped, solid clump.

The shape and shadow of the resulting cast are examined and interpreted to predict the various future events of the coming year. Different shapes have different meaning, promising either good luck or health, wealth, happiness, sorrow, sickness and so on. If the cast breaks down to pieces, it is a sign of "bad luck".

Mine had two pieces this year. We came up with an umbrella/parasol/tree and a heart. I think that's quite good, don't you think?

How was your New Year's Eve?

  1. happy new year, dear Elisabeth!
you and your boyfriend had such a lovely celebration together. I really enjoyed all those pictures a lot. your home is beautiful and the new dress is absolutely gorgeous as well.
now, when it comes to me.. we visited my fiance's parents in Tartu, then took a train to Jõgeva again and also visited my grandparents together with my parents. we ended the year with my parents in front of their house, watching the fireworks. but I must say it's not a very important holiday in my eyes and I didn't make any promises either. didn't even take any photos that day :P
