Birthday: carneval masquerade

The times are the masquerade of the eternities.

Still feeling ill with this relentless flu, I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to show you how I celebrated my birthday last weekend - with a Venetian theme!

As those of you who have been following my blog since 2009 know, I've visited Venice many times but never during the well-known time of carnival, Carnevale di Venezia. I guess one has to book one year in advance for that. However, having visited the city many times, and loving it, one can not remain untouched by the masks that allure in Venice all year round. Those who haven't read my most recent blog posts about Venice can have a look here and here. Since turning 27 isn't such a big deal, it's not an age of any importance, I thought the carnival theme would be perfect for it, to make it a little bit more special.

When I started to plan my outfit for the evening, the mask was the most important part of it since one can't organize a Venetian dinner without masks! I combined a mask made by my sister with some peacock feathers I had picked up. I thought it went well with my petrol blue dress from Mango, my second hand petrol blue shoes (label: Gino Ventori), my stunning sequin purse from Vila and accessories (necklace, earrings, ring) from Bijou Brigitte.

So four of my best friends came over, and we had a superb three-course-dinner together! As a starter we enjoyed a cold fennel soup with tomato-basil bruschettas, as the main course we had risotto with peas and smoked ham, and as the dessert we had citrus pannacotta with berries. I had set the table with flowers, leaves and confetti.

And on came the masks! And the carnival had started - what great fun! In the company of great friends, ageing doesn't feel that bad! Thank you girls! The second picture is from the nightclub we went to afterwards, and there was quite a lot of smoke there so that is why the photo is so blurry. Sorry for that, but I actually think it makes the photo better, haha!

When have you last put on a mask? Do you like masquerades?

Happy International Women's Day and Friday!

What's your opinion?

  1. when did I wear a mask? I can't remember but maybe as a child.. as an adult I have tried those on in some stores, just for fun. it's not exactly my thing, to be hoest. but your fancy dinner indeed sounds (and looks!) like a lot of fun and fabulousness. I also love the bright dress. such a good colour for you.
now, you have asked some questions from me..
unfortunately I don't have good photos of my sideswept hair. and I have no idea where to find that skirt from.. though I would love to know.
when it comes to the cake I made then I think it was one with honey, carrots, raisins and nuts. my fiance loved it (especially with coffee) since it was pretty sweet (the men in my family love sweet things, haha). it was maybe a tad bit too sweet for me because of the honey but I ate small pieces at once and then it was nice :)

  3. I´ve been only in Venice to hop on a fairy to Greece. But I definitely want to go there and stay to discover the city.
I can´t even remember if I´ve ever worn a masque... On Halloween I was dressed as a ghost, with an old bedsheet. Maybe this would count as a masque!? ;)
