Restaurant Day, May 2013 & Arabia Street Festival

Helsinki, 19 degrees

There are no mistakes, no coincidences. All events are blessings given to us to learn from.

Like I mentioned in my last blog post, last Saturday was a super busy day with lots of happenings here in Helsinki. In this blog post I'll take you with me and show you what my Saturday was all about! Summery Saturdays are the best: they bring a warm breeze to the city, they smell of flowers and the provide sunlight until late, right now about 10pm!

On Saturday, Helsinki enjoyed one of its Restaurant Days, which are organized now four times a year! The Helsinkian invention where everyone can open a restaurant for a day without any permissions or schooling is one of my favorite local events! You can read about previous Restaurant Days here, here and here. This time I headed to the Abattoir with two of my dearest friends, and got to try both Indian and Tibetan food. It was delicious!

After eaten some delicious Indian samosas, Tibetan momos and a large pink whoopie pie, I continued to another cool urban location. Set in a old red brick building, the free Master of Aalto exhibition called Dreams Made Real won't leave anybody disappointed!

Our world is constantly screaming out its needs and wants, presenting us with an endless stream of moral dilemmas, opportunities and tough challenges. How do we make the right call, build the right things or plan the right approach? How can we create the future we want?

These are the questions that have shaped Masters of Aalto 2013: Dreams Made Real. The answers from the graduating Masters are as wildly diverse as they are on point. They represent hope, inspiration and vision – each and every work is one student’s effort to sculpt their part of a better future.

I loved the vitality, diversity, inventiveness and buoyant positivity of Dreams Made Real! Most of all I fell in love with the location, the Kruununmakasiini (direct translation: Crown Warehouse).

Later on, we headed to the Arabia Street Festival! During this fun free event anyone could put together a flea market, but besides that the event offered free live music and dance performances! We loved the temporary graffiti walls that had been put up during the event so that anyone could try out their artistic side!

The Arabia district of Helsinki is one of the city's most interesting areas since it for instance hosts the Arabia ceramic factory, one of Helsinki's unique factories that are still up and running today! Do you know Arabia's ceramics?

This evenful day I chose to wear my new white jeans and a jeans shirt! I'll showcase my outfit better in an upcoming blog post!

What's your opinion?

  1. I would love to attend an event like this, an explosion of amazing food and culture! What is your favourite type of cuisine? Great photos. You look so pretty. Our winter daytime temperatures are between 4-10 degrees daytime and it drops to the minuses during the nights and mornings. The coldest it ever was here is about -11.
