Business trip: Amsterdam, Netherlands 2/4

Created out of a curiosity to explore the cultural luggage of guests, a longing to make a connection between Dutch culture and theirs and a zest for making visitors feel welcome.

It's time for my second blog post about my business trip to Amsterdam. You can read the first one here if you missed it. This time I want to introduce my hotel to you. Why, you might ask. Because it's the most thrilling hotel experience I've had so far in my life!

Kuten mainitsin edellisessä blogikirjoituksessani, kävin maaliskuun lopussa Amsterdamissa koska matkailualan sosiaalisen median tapahtuma #SoMeT15EU järjestettiin siellä. Tässä kirjoituksessa haluan kertoa hotellistani koska se edusti parasta hotellimajoitusta, jota olen elämäni aikana kokenut!

The hotel that is called Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy has 117 rooms that showcase Dutch artists and designers. The hotel has four platforms used for exhibitions, meetings and events, and a library! What makes the hotel so special is that the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy is the first one to five star design hotel in the world! Because I was attending #SoMeT15EU, I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a five star hotel room!

Koska osallistuin matkailualan sosiaalisen median tapahtumaan, minulle annettiin viiden tähden huone alennettuun hintaan!

The building has a fascinating history! The building itself is an official national monument of the Netherlands. The building was established in 1918 in the eclectic style, commissioned by the shipping company Royal Holland Lloyd (KHL). The KHL used the hotel as advertising, to recruit clients for passengers heading to South America. From 1921 to 1936 the building was used as temporary accommodation for immigrants, mostly Easter European Jews. In 1936, the KHL went bankrupt and the building was purchased by the City of Amsterdam. Subsequently, from 1938 it was used as a shelter for Jewish refugees from Germany and during World War II, the building was used as a prison. After the war, it continued to function as an adult prison, and later became a juvenile detention center in 1963. By 1989, the detention center building had fallen into neglect. It was then served as studio space for artists from the former Yugoslavia. In 1996, a competition was held to decide what the building would best be used for and was later in 2004 turned into a hotel.

Itse rakennuksella oli vaikuttava historia! Nykyään se on suojeltu rakennus, koska se edustaa Alankomaiden mielenkiintoista historiaa. Rakennus rakennettiin vuonna 1918 Royal Holland Lloyd -varustamon toimesta. Varustamo käytti rakennusta matkustajahotellina. Sotavuosina 21-36 rakennusta käytettiin sen sijaan maahanmuuttajien majoituspaikkana. Toisen maailmansodan aikana Amsterdamin kaupunki omisti rakennuksen ja suojeli siellä juutalaisia. Rakennusta käytettiin myös vankilana. Myöhemmin 90-luvulla rakennus toimi taiteilijoiden ateljeena. Vuonna 1996 suunnittelukilpailu pidettiin ja vuonna 2004 rakennuksesta tuli uudestaan hotelli.

My five-star-room would have surprised even the most well-travelled guest! When I entered the room after walking in the rain from Amsterdam's Central Railway Station, my jaw dropped! I had a beautiful entrance, a dreamy king-size bed, a bathtub and a hammock in the room! The rustic wooden beams were stunning! Even the corridors of the hotel were filled with art, I loved it! I loved how in this hotel, the building's history was present all the time but in the best way. Since I stayed on the sixth floor, I could enjoy the view of the downstair library and exhibition platforms. My stay here was full of surprises, and I highly recommend the hotel!

  1. I usually try to book one of the cheapest hotels staying out of the "motel" range. If I have to travel I would spend less time in the room, so I'm not too picky about where I sleep and keep my things.

    1. I understand your point of view, but when you travel more than 3-4 times a year, you really start to appreciate a good room and hotel. On a business trip, it becomes even more important.

I love the fact that it is a hotel with rooms that show Dutch artists and designers! Such a great and positive experience, I am glad to know the hotel through your post!
