Nordic Fashion Illustrations

Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.

A couple of days ago on Nordic Fashion Magazine, I stumbled across on  an interesting Nordic exhibition that I wanted to share on the blog - "New Nordic Fashion Illustrations Vol. 2" at the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design (ETDM). It runs 23.5.-27.9. The exhibition showcases illustrations from artists with roots the Nordic region: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Estonia and is a follow-up to an earlier exhibition.

Pari päivää sitten näin Nordic Fashion Magazinessa artikkelin, joka kertoi "New Nordic Fashion Illustrations Vol. 2" -näyttelystä, joka tällä hetkellä on esillä Tallinnan Designmuseossa, eli Eesti Tarbekunsti- ja disainmuuseumissa. Näyttely jatkuu lokakuun 27. päivään asti ja esittelee suomalaisten, ruotsalaisten, norjalaisten, tanskalaisten, sekä virolaisten kuvittajien töitä.

The earlier exhibition was held in Tallinn in 2011 and in Helsinki at the Design Museum in 2012. The exhibition attracted then thousands of visitors but only showcased works of eight fashion illustrators from three countries: Finland, Sweden and Estonia. This year the illustrators are a stunning amount of 21, and come also from Norway and Denmark. How exciting! I hope I can make it to the exhibition!

Kyseinen näyttely on jatkumoa Tallinnan ja Helsingin Designmuseon näyttelyille vuosina 2011-2012, jotka keräsivät tuhansia kävijöitä. Uusi näyttely esittelee 21:n kuvittajan töitä. Toivon, että pääsen kesän aikana käymään Tallinnassa, jotta voin nähdä näyttelyn!

According to the exhibition makers, fashion illustrations first gained wider recognition between the covers of fashion magazines. In magazines the illustrations were the mediators of fashion design in the pre-photography era. However, during the last decades, the focus has shifted from conveying garments to independent self-expression, creating a new visual and captivating context and fascinating the viewer withidiosyncratic worlds. The illustrations, in their uniqueness, have found broad application in the fashion industry, magazines, the interior design of fashion outlets, and in the marketing strategies of the most diverse brands in the field of fashion and pop culture.

The illustrators are usually inspired by history, but also the present and even Nordic lifestyle. They are proficient in most of the various drawing and painting techniques. I think the unlimited range of subjects in the illustrations is fascinating! The illustrations combine realistic human proportions and ideals, geometry and the surreal, nature and mythology, poetry and the mundane, photography and free-hand drawing.
