Street art inspiration: Myyr York, Myyrmäki, Vantaa

Helsinki, -3 degrees

Design is a fundamental human activity, relevant and useful to everyone. Anything humans create—be it product, communication or system—is a result of the process of making inspiration real. I believe in doing what works as circumstances change: quirky or unusual solutions are often good ones.

Picture a place where Alice in Wonderland & graffiti walls meet Goldilocks and the Three Bears & Peter-No-Tail. Sounds good? Then keep on reading. Some time ago I had the chance to visit one of the places I've been wanting to see the most in the Helsinki region - Myyr York that is. Yeah, you read correctly. About 20 minutes from the Helsinki Central Railway Station, you'll find the Myyrmäki train station in the neighboring city of Vantaa and believe me - these 20 minutes are worth spending in order to experience the unique street art that lies in this district! Let's start from the fact that the train station building itself is covered with the impressive street art of the Chilean group UnKolorDistinto. When you continue inside, you'll find a completely different world of street art.

Kuvittele mielessäsi paikka, jossa yhdistyvät Ihmemaan Liisa, graffitiseinät, Kultakutri ja kolme karhua ja Pekka Töpöhäntä. Kuulostaako hyvältä? Jatka siis lukemista. Vähän aikaa sitten pääsin vierailemaan oppaan johdolla Myyr Yorkissa. Myyr York sijaitsee Vantaan Myyrmäen aseman kohdalla ja alue on todellakin 20 minuutin junamatkan arvoinen katutaitensa takia! Itse asemarakennus on taidetaos koska sitä koristaa vaikuttava katutaideteos, joka on chileläisen UnKolorDistinton tekemä. Asemarakennus kätkee sitten sisällään toisen upean teoksen, eli sisälle kannattaa kurkata.

Here, the Finnish street art collective Multicolored Dreams has been let loose - and for a good reason! The result is fascinating! One of my favorites must have been the mural of the pink-haired lady with a black shirt painted by Finnish street art artist Salla Ikonen, who belongs to the collective. But I also really liked the giant elephant, the kittens, bunnies, and bears! I could have stayed inside of that station forever! In the vicinity of the station, there is a concentration of about 10-20 more pieces of street art! You can find them all on this online map. Most of the artworks located outside of the station building represent more traditional graffiti walls that are equally intriguing! The Myyr York & Myyrmäki train station street art project is hosted & organized by the Vantaa Art Museum called Artsi. It is having its re-opening after an extensive expansion next weekend so be sure to check it out if you're into street art, as this art form will be present also at the actual art museum.

Asemarakenuksessa kotimainen katutaidekollektiivi Multicolored Dreams on päästetty valloilleen - ja mikä jälki! Lopputulos on kiehtova! Yksi suosikeistani on ehdottomasti seinämaalaus punapäisestä naisesta, jolla on musta paita. Teos on Salla Ikosen kädenjälkeä. Myyr York & Myyrmäen taideasema on Vantaan taidemuseon, eli Artsin hanke. Museo juhlii uusia tilojaan ensi viikonloppuna eli sinne kannattaa suunnata jos katutaide kiinnostaa!

I haven't mentioned street art that much on the blog before, but I truly enjoy it as I feel it enlivens a city's industrial surroundings! You might remember this earlier blog post about the Suvilahti district of Helsinki, where you can find the highest concentration of street art in my city. However, even in the neighborhood that I live in, we have stunning street art underneath some pedestrian bridges! I associate street art with a larger theme - urban art that is - like tattoo art, which I also love! I think the two should be combined more often.

  3. Indeed, it is inspiring and I am very thankful that you shared it here. I enjoyed a lot reading it. I am thinking to organize a small art event but not sure how to select an event venue. Do you have any tips for it as I want things to look at their best?
