Finnish maternity package

Helsinki, 10 degrees

When you're pregnant, you can think of nothing but having your own body to yourself again, yet after having given birth you realize that the biggest part of you is now somehow external, subject to all sorts of dangers and disappearance, so you spend the rest of your life trying to figure out how to keep it close enough for comfort. That's the strange thing about being a mother: until you have a baby, you don't even realize how much you were missing one.

Before my pregnancy, there were some preassumptions that I had about being pregnant. I thought, for instance, that a pregnant belly would be quite hard - instead I've come to realize that it's quite soft, actually. At least when the baby isn't kicking or boxing on the inside of the belly. This even though it seems "blown up" from the outside. I also didn't expect to find it strange to have something living inside my belly, but actually in the beginning, it felt quite strange, and only now, during the last three months of the pregancy, it has started to feel very natural. Now, I'm actually dreading the day when I won't have a baby in my stomach anymore. Funny, how opinions change and one gets used to things, right? An empty & regular belly feels quite boring to me right now.

One thing that I have always considered as a confirming sign of becoming a mother, is the Finnish maternity package. It's something I've been very much looking forward to receiving as it makes the pregnancy so much more concrete.

The maternity package contains baby clothes as well as care products and materials. It is updated yearly in response to feedback from mothers-to-be. While the range of items remains largely the same, the colours and patterns change, and some completely new items are added as well. There are altogether about 50-60 different items in the box. It is available solely as a benefit offered under the Finnish social security system. You can read about the package here, if you aren't familiar with it from before. The package is one of the best well-known Finnish phenomena in the world.

Pakkauksessa on yhteensä noin 50-60 tuotetta. Pakkaus on äitiysavustuslain mukainen sosiaaliturvaetuus, jonka tuotteet on kilpailutettu EU-lainsäädännön mukaan. Voit lukea enemmän äitiyspakkauksesta täältä.

So, some weeks ago I finally received the package. It took less than a week for me to get the package to a nearby supermarket for pick-up after I had made the online application for it. In Finland, only women that have been more than five months pregnant can order the package, and it's done with attaching a doctor certificate from the child health center to the application.

Noin kolme ja puoli viikkoa sitten vastaanotin pakkauksen. Pakkauksen saaminen kesti alle viikon siitä, kun sain pakkauksen tilattua sähköisen asioinnin kautta Kelan sivuilta. Pakkaus saapui lähi-Valintataloon.

In this blog post, you'll see some of my favorite pieces in the package: baby bodysuits, socks, and the overall. I must say that I find the whole package to be beautifully made, super cute with its duck family illustrated on the package itself. You can see a listing of all the items here.

Mielestäni koko pakkaus on erittäin kauniisti tehty, pidän erityisesti pakkauksen ankkakuvituksesta. Näet koko listauksen pakkauksen sisällöstä täältä.

Had you heard about the Finnish maternity package before? What kind of baby clothing and/or care products and materials do you like?

Mitä mieltä olet äitiyspakkauksesta? Mitkä vauvan vaatteet ja hoitotarvikkeet ovat makuusi?

What's your opinion?

  1. (obviously) I hadn't heard about it before but I have seen some Estonian variants (the ones that come from pharmacies) and those can't be compared to the Finnish package. at all. I have to say it's incredible how your country supports you!

    1. Oh, I'm surprised that you hadn't. I've met people from the other side of the world who's only heard about this when it comes to Finland. Yeah, I agree - it's a great support!

  2. That would be a nice program for America. Women aren't even guaranteed paid maternity leave here. Right-wingers in congress just wish them the best of luck and work on getting themselves another tax break. The same politicians who claim they are "pro-family". I've always admired the innovations of Nordic governments
