What's Cooking Helsinki

Helsinki, 13 degrees

No one who cooks, cooks alone. Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.

You might remember my earlier blog post about the surprise dinner I organized for work in the #HelsinkiSecret Residence. That dinner was put together with the help of the great guys behind #heleats, and it functioned as an intimate preview dinner to what I experienced last weekend - What's Cooking Helsinki - a dinner party for about 80-90 people in the local Abattoir, which is one of the most interesting culinary hot spots in Helsinki. The Finnish Top Chef  reality competition television series winner Teemu Laurell was responsible for the menu last week. Out of the four-course-surprise menu, my personal favorites were the tasty second course with white fish, butter milk, dill and cucumber, and the yummy dessert with yoghurt, lemon sorbet, wild flowers and meringue. I went to the dinner with the residence resident of the week, American Anne from the blog Part Time Traveler and my local friend Kathrin from Luminoucity. At the end of the dinner, all dinner guests got to pick basils to bring back home with them from a green wall at the dinner venue - such a great idea! More of this, please!

Do you prefer large dinner events, or intimate dinner parties? When did you last enjoy a surprise menu?

Suositko itse isoja illalliskestejä, vaiko pieniä intiimejä illallisia? Milloin nautit yllätysmenusta viimeksi?

What's your opinion?

  1. I do remember the diner post on your blog, and this one now, for 80-90 people seemed to be excellent! With a Finnish reality show winner cooking, the menu sounds amazing! I don;t eat fish, so I would love to try the dessert, with meringue and lemon sorbet (love love love!) By the way, I read about the Finnish maternity pack, what a great idea!!!! I had no idea about it! Hope you have a great weekend!

  3. I actually prefer eating at home, though I think restaurants have far better food. My wife enjoys sitting down at the restaurants even if it was a 1 mile/km away from the house.

  4. gosh how delicious everything looks! it really makes me drool all over my keyboard :D by the way, we visited a Japanese restaurant in our hotel in Tenerife and had a 6-course dinner there. a completely new experience for me since the cooks were creating everything in front of us and it was really cool. I will probably share it in a future blog post when my husband or I manage to make a video about it (I filmed quite a lot during the dinner).
