10 reasons to visit the new Helsinki City Museum, part 2

Helsinki, 23 degrees

I can only note that the past is beautiful because one never realises an emotion at the time. It expands later, and thus we don't have complete emotions about the present, only about the past.

Were you already wondering what the other five reasons are? Here follows my second blog post (you'll find the first one here) about why I think you should visit the newly renovated Helsinki City Museum.

Osasitko arvata loput viisi syytä käydä uudistetussa Helsingin kaupunginmuseossa? Tässä ne tulevat! Ensimmäiset viisi syytä löydät tästä blogikirjoituksesta.

6) courtyards - the new museum has opened up & made public beautiful courtyards that before have been local secrets. My favorite -  the Falkman courtyard.

7) museum shop - the Helsinki City Museum's shop has always been one of my favorites in town, I've especially loved its posters and Advent calendars for Christmas. In the new museum shop, you'll find Helsinki-themed postcards, picture books, unique gifts & nostalgic souvenirs.

8) Children's Town - The city’s oldest house is brought back to use by the youngest citizens & visitors again! In Children’s Town, Helsinki’s past is illustrated by means of play and activities - this is the most interactive part of the whole museum! I especially loved the old class room, the dress up room and the grandmother's place: a 70's-theme-room where you can actually find volonteering old ladies, "grannies". How cute is that? / Lasten kaupunki - kaupungin vanhin rakennus Sederholmin talo on saatu jälleen kaupungin nuorimpien käyttöön! Tämä onkin museon interaktiivisin osa! Pidin erityisesti 1970-luvun mummolasta (josta löytyvät ihka oikeat vapaehtoismummot), Sederholmin puodista ja kansakoululuokasta.

9) new viewpoints in the city - the Helsinki City Museum is located in the oldest blocks of the city called the Tori Quarters, next to Senate Square. The views of the city from this museum complex (five old buildings + a modern museum extension built between them) are a must-see! / uudet näkymät - koska kaupunginmuseo sijaitsee Torikortteleissa, se tarjoaa uudenlaisia kaupunkinäkymiä - kuinka moni on nähnyt Helsingin sen vanhimman talon ikkunasta?

10) picture archive - the Helsinki City Museum’s collection has almost one million photographs of Helsinki & the everyday life of its inhabitants from the 1860s until today = a Helsinki lover's heaven! / kuvaselaamo - kaupunginmuseon kokoelmissa on lähes miljoona valokuvaa Helsingistä ja helsinkiläisten arjesta 1860-luvulta nykypäivään = Helsinki-hullun unelma!

    1. Great to hear! The Helsinki Zoo (Korkeasaari) is great too, especially since it's set on an island in the Helsinki archipelago <3
