Fine Van Brooklin

Helsinki, 22 degrees

Every great love starts with a great story...

Already back in 2012, I presented in this blog post my jewelry selection of dragonflies. I'm sure you can imagine that my selection has only been growing ever since, so today I have quite many dragonfly pieces in my jewelry box. I might make an updated blog post about them at some point. Today I wanted to present the newest addition to my dragonfly jewelry family. Recently I collaborated with an interesting Finnish jewelry label called Fine Van Brooklin, and I thought I would dedicate this blog post to showcasing some of its beautiful jewelry.

Jo vuonna 2012 esittelin tässä blogikirjoituksessa sudenkorentokorukokoelmani. Voit varmasti aavistaa, että kokoelma on siitä lähtien vähitellen kasvanut, joten tänä päivänä aika moni sudenkorento löytyy korulippaastani. Kirjoitan ehkä päivitetyn kirjoituksen kokoelmasta jossain vaiheessa. Tänään halusin kuitenkin esitellä sudenkorentoperheen uusimman tulokkaan koska tein hiljattain blogiyhteistyötä mielenkiintoisen kotimaisen koruyrityksen, Fine Van Brooklinin, kanssa.

Fine van Brooklin is created by jewelry designer Lea Kähkönen in her little studio in the Punavuori district of Helsinki, also known as Design District Helsinki. Lea makes jewelry in small series, creating many unique pieces; often mixing lovely vintage bits with new materials. The jewelry has carefully selected details and color combinations that create a mistery around them and nostalgically remind you of Belle Époque, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. These label is ideal for the charming, modern day flappers. Lea's roots lie firmly in the soil of the North Karelia region in Eastern Finland, close to the Russian border, so this label does not represent the classic Scandinavian minimalism. She believes that her inspiration comes from the richly ornamented handicrafts of the Karelian women and the culture filled with songs, poems and emotional richness. As Finland in general, also Lea's style is made out of contrasts: in her jewelry vintage elements meet new materials. Lea mainly uses gemstones, freshwater pearls, czech glass beads and some Swarovski crystals.

I stumbled upon this label by chance at the local designer event called Nordic Designers' Pop Up Shop, and immediately had my eye on its stunning dragonfly pieces. When I had a look at its website, and read the history behind the label's name, I was intrigued. The name Fine Van Brooklin is a variation of the book title "Fine Van Brooklyn" (1941) of Finnish author Mika Waltari, who's mostly known for his long historical novels. Many say that he's actually the best known Finnish author in the world that there is: his varied production covers nearly all literature genres and, year after year, his book (Sinuhe) is selected as the best and most important Finnish novel. I encourage you to read the whole story about Fine Van Brooklin's designer Lea's relationship to Waltari's book here, but in short his novella Fine Van Brooklyn has a plot that can be related to Lea's life: she's lived in France for some time and has actually visited the village of Carnac where the book's story takes place. As the author is Finnish, the book also links to her roots. Finally, it refers to New York City, from where she got her first grand inspiration for jewelry making.

Itse tutustuin korumerkkiin sattumalta Nordic Designers' Pop Up Shop -tapahtumassa, jossa luonnollisesti sudenkorentokorut veivät huomioni. Toisaalta taas Lea sai aivan ensimmäisen kipinän käsillä tekemiseen ja jonkin ihan oman jutun luomiseen ensimmäisellä New Yorkin matkallaan syksyllä 2005. Lue korumerkin koko tarina täältä.

As I could choose a piece of jewelry from Fine Van Brooklin's selection, I fell for its beautiful Garden earrings in antique rose and black, made out of silver, brass and Swarovski crystals. They represent Fine van Brooklin classics as they are ornamental, romantic, feminine, timeless and lightweight, and therefore easy to use. As I usually use minimalistic jewelry, I think they are a great decorative addition to my jewelry box; a pair I'll wear to special occasions.

Koska sain valita haluamani korun Fine Van Brooklinin valikoimasta, valitsin kauniit Garden -korvakorut.

Thanks to their name, the earrings inspired me to revisit one of my favorite places in Helsinki on one of the daily strolls with my baby girl: the Vallila Allotment Garden. I had a great time exloring the summery scenery of the garden close to our home!
