Reflections on everyday life with a baby

Helsinki, 15 degrees

The smallest feet make the biggest footprints in our hearts.

Incredible - my baby girl is two months old today! Therefore, I think this is an excellent day to reflect upon our everyday life & routines together. The beautiful flower bouquet that you see in this blog post is one of the wonderful present we received when we returned home from the hospital with our baby girl. I love its vivid colors and different textures. I still remember the amazing floral scent it brought to our home! A true sign of affection, if you ask me...

Uskomatonta, tyttäreni on tänään kahden kuukauden ikäinen! Näin ollen minusta on varsin sopivaa pysähtyä tänään pohtimaan yhteistä vauva-arkeamme.

Sleep / Uni

Still today, it's not yet possible to talk about a functioning day rhythm with our baby girl. However, I've noticed that sleep is by far the most important factor in our everyday life right now. Why? Because it affects everything: our moods, energy levels etc. I can't take naps during the day at the same time as my baby girl, so we sleep together merely at night. We've managed to take a nap together maybe once or twice during the past two months. My baby girl still takes two naps a day: one in the morning, at around 10am-12pm, and one in the afternoon, at around 2pm-4pm. Sometimes, but rarely she can sleep three hours in a row. Currently, we go to bed at around 9pm-10pm, and my baby girl wakes up twice during the night: at 2am-4pm and at 5am-7am. I still feel that I'm getting enough sleep, but I must say that sleep tastes really sweet!

Food / Ruoka

I've noticed as a new mother that I must eat both variedly & largely so that I have enough energy for everyday life with a baby. I, for instance, immediately feel weak if my breakfast has been too small. I strive to eat as healthy as it's possible, but actually, I feel it's even more important to eat variedly so that I introduce different foods & ingredients to my baby girl. This hopefully will prevent her from getting food allergies as she grows up. Besides food, also water is key. Due to the breastfeeding, drinking water is very important. I strive to drink at least one glass of water everytime I feed my baby girl. Because she still eats eight times per day, that means a lot of drinking as well.

Exercise / Liikunta

The daily 1-3-hour-long walks are crucial both for me and my baby girl. This, because I've noticed that her naps are better thanks to the fresh air, and I myself feel that the walks function as my "me-time" when I can think about and reflect upon personal matters. As everyday life with a baby has introduced many completely new things to me, it's important to find time to process them. Exercise also makes me feel less tired. In the beginning, we used to take walks in the afternoon, but right now, morning walks work the best for us. They create a great rhythm to the day. The walks can easily be combined to running errands (going grocery shopping and/or visiting the post office etc.).

Cleanness / Puhtaus

In order to stay healthy, I strive to keep both our home & hands clean. Because everyday life with a baby is so intense, I've learned to take showers in the evenings when my fiancé is also at home and can look after our baby girl. I usually tidy up our home while our baby girl takes naps during the day. I've also noticed that I wash my hands more often nowadays, and a hand sanitizer is always at reach!

Isn't it fascinating how one's everyday life changes when a little one arrives? When else have basics been so important?

Eikö olekin kiehtovaa miten arki muuttuu vauvan myötä? Milloin muulloin perusasiat ovat olleet yhtä tärkeitä?

What's your opinion?

  1. It's nice to know about these "measurees" - drinking water, walking, having fresh air and then sleeping in a better way, and washing hands more! I am glad you have been sleeping not in a perfect way, but still, not like getting no sleep at all. I saw your baby girl today and she is sooo lovely! I hope you have a very beautiful day!

  2. it would be so nice to always do all those things - drink enough water, move enough, sleep enough, clean enough, be as healthy as possible. with or without a baby, they're so important to have a nice everyday life :) right now I'm often dreaming about such life but mine is not quite there yet. it's so difficult to be super effective after your 8.5-hour workday! and when it's weekend I want to spend some time away from the house so it's like an endless circle, haha.

    1. Haha, I agree! But never before have the basics been this important! I guess one realizes these things when one takes care of someone else. And one day, I will have to continue this + go back to work. Now that will be tricky.
