Tauko 1/2

Helsinki, 20 degrees

Every person needs to take one day away.  A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future.  Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence.  Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for.  Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.

According to a local ghost story, there's a centrally-located island in Helsinki, to which you have to pay toll on the so-called Bridge of Love in order to be able to enter without feeling the grudge of the people who have been killed and thrown into the sea from that specific bridge. It's actually an island crawling with fascinating ghost stories of unhappy love, wars, and prisoners. It hosts stunning Art Nouveau / Jugend style architecture, the biggest Russian-Orthodox Church in Western Europe, the Russian tsar's old stables, a guest harbor, former casino, and prison. Today it has some of Helsinki's most interesting restaurants & cafés, a park named after the author of the Moomins - Tove Jansson, as well as a busy ferry harbor. I'm naturally talking about the district of Helsinki named Katajanokka, where I recently was introduced to a very interesting Finnish fashion design concept named TAUKO (pause/break in Finnish) that is focused on sustainable clothing.

Paikallisen kummitustarinan mukaan Helsingissä sijaitsee saari, johon sinun tulee maksaa tullimaksu jotta pääset ylittämään sinne vievää Rakkauden siltaa, tai muutoin koet kummitusten kainon. Näin, koska kyseiseltä sillalta on heitetty mereen lukuisia kuolleita ihmisiä Helsingin historian aikana.

They say that there are no rest stops or lay-bys on the road of life. However, TAUKO strives to prove the opposite - that there is always time to reflect upon one's consumption. The concept shop, located in the stone foundation of a building, is as cute & unique as a flagship store & studio can get! A hip bicycle with the TAUKO logo leads me to it. I enter through its adorable floral window entrance and descend to a marvelous world of recycled fashion wear. I sit down with co-founder Mila and learn more about the concept. Founded in 2008 by two Finnish ladies from Lappeenranta, which is located about two and a half hours from Helsinki in Eastern Finland, the concept is based on recycling high-quality local health care textiles. This means that the founders, Kaisa Rissanen & Mila Moisio, have found a way to express themselves while at the same time they decrease waste, and turn it into beautiful garments.

Sanotaan, ettei elämässä ole taukopaikkoja. TAUKO kuitenkin pyrkii osoittamaan, että joskus kannattaa pysähtyä miettimään omaa kulutustaan. TAUKOn söpö ja sadunomainen konseptiliike & lippulaiva sijaitsee talon kivijalassa. Hauska TAUKOn logolla varustettu pyörä johdatti minut liikkeeseen. TAUKO perustettiin vuonna 2008 kahden lappeenrantalaisen naisen, Kaisa Rissasen & Mila Moision, johdosta.

Inspired by the traditions of Eastern Finland, Finnish nature & its four distinct seasons, architecture, art and history, these two ladies strive to create timeless quality clothes that stand the test of time. The prices range between €95 (tops, skirts) - €400 (jackets). Most of the dresses cost around €200. As this is a truly special concept, TAUKO has already been able to go international. Today, TAUKO's clothes are designed in Finland, and crafted in Finland, Estonia, Germany and Poland. The lookbook for TAUKO's Leijat! collection was photographed in Japan, and TAUKO has retailers even in Germany & Sweden. All the TAUKO collections are made using locally recycled textiles. Therefore Mila describes the Finnish concept as both Scandinavian with minimalist features and Baltic with rich colors & details. You might have spotted TAUKO's striking designs in some of Helsinki's finest restaurants: for instance, Juuri, Nokka, Aino & Lonna wear its aprons.

Itä-Suomen perinteiden, Suomen luonnon ja vuodenaikojen, arkkitehtuurin, taiteen ja historian inspiroimana, nämä kaksi suunnittelijaa pyrkivät luomaan ajattomia ja korkealaatuisia vaatteita. Hinnat liikkuvat 95 (hameet, topit) - 400 (takit) euron välillä. Suurin osa mekoista maksavat n. 200€. Koska konsepti on niin ainutlaatuinen, TAUKO on jo pystynyt kansainvälistymään. TAUKOn vaatteet suunnitellaan Suomessa, ja valmistetaan Suomessa, Virossa, Saksassa ja Puolassa. TAUKOn Leijat!

I was deeply impressed by this concept! As I recently, when I was giving birth, was very familiar with hospital textiles, I was shocked to hear that the textiles used to be considered merely as waste before. According to Mila, TAUKO doesn't have any competitors that base their business on these recycled hospital textiles. Finnish design company Globe Hope uses some of these textiles for their design, but in a much smaller scale. To base one's design company solely on recycled materials is truly bold & creative, if you ask me. This, because then the materials are the ones that guide you, and you have to design according to the terms of the materials.

I love the stunning sculptural cuts that the garments have! Besides the recycled materials, I think that is what makes TAUKO stand out, and makes it worth while to press pause when going through its collections.

Itse pidän kovasti konseptin veistoksellisista vaateleikkauksista! Kierrätysmateriaalien lisäksi, juuri leikkaukset ovatkin mielestäni TAUKOn tapa erottua massasta. Konsepti edustaa hyvin ansaittua taukoa, ja liike oivaa taukopaikkaa.

What do you think about this unique concept? Can you guess which dress out of the TAUKO x Neulomo collection I picked out for myself?

Mitä mieltä olet tästä uniikista konseptista? Arvaatko minkä mekon valitsin itselleni TAUKO x Neulomo -mallistosta?
