My top 5 of Lux Helsinki 2017 + 3 special mentions!

Helsinki, -5 degrees

Be the light that helps others see; it is what gives life its deepest significance.

I claim that the world's most courageous people live in the Nordic countries. Why? I recently saw a Youtube video that stated that in wintertime we Finns have less sunlight than 99,7% of the world's population. Everyone knows that it's common to say that children are afraid of the dark, but we say that adults aren't. But do we actually ever grow out of this fear? In my opinion no. That is why only the boldest & bravest learn how to play with darkness, as we Finns do! The best game of light that I know is the annual highlight of Helsinki's winter season - the light festival Lux Helsinki. It allows adults and children alike to enjoy the city by toying around with light. Don't get me wrong, these light installations are far from jokes - they're skillful & sparkling masterstrokes of moonbeam! In this blog post, I'll share my personal favorites of this year's glittering event.

Väitän, että maailman rohkeimmat ihmiset asuvat Pohjoismaissa. Miksi? Suosikkivaloleikkini on vuosittainen valofestivaali Lux Helsinki.

Special mention: Lux Architecture – Waterfront & Shader: Cube

I can't remember when Helsinki's most iconic seafront (with among others its City Hall and Presidential Palace) has looked this beautifully illuminated last time, therefore these installations deserve a special mention.

En muista milloin olisin viimeksi nähnyt Helsingin ikonisen Eteläsataman näin kauniisti valaistuneena, joten mielestäni nämä teokset ansaitsevat erikoismaininnan.

As I mentioned, I think clowning is allowed when it comes to light art. This installation showed how it's done in a fun & playful way, as a talking & singing mouth was projected onto the wall of one of the historical courtyards in town. The lips looked feminine, but the voice was masculine. It doesn't get more entertaining than this!

Special mention: Petri Tuhkanen: People Power

Interactive light art is great! This installation invited people to observe & play with light: when one stepped on the scales, the installation came to life.

Interaktiivinen valotaide on parasta!

Special mention: Tarja Ervasti: Domus 360° – Four Homes

Each time there's a light installation that focuses on the symbol of the city, the Helsinki Cathedral that is, it deserves a special mention as the white building itself is the city's best blank canvas - alluring locals to cast shadows of themselves on it.

My top 2/5: Rölli Ridanpää & Tero Laine: Light Pipes

Last year, my favorite installation was the interactive Cloud. This year, the Light Pipes reminded me of its nature. I could see that this was the installation with which people spent most time, as it fascinated both children and adults.

Viime vuonna suosikkiteokseni oli interaktiivinen Cloud. Tänä vuonna, Light Pipes muistutti minua pilviteoksen luonteesta.

My top 3/5: Outi Pieski: Gorži

This installation was in my opinion the most emotional one. As waterfalls cascaded out of the windows of the Helsinki Cathedral's chapel, the artwork reminded us of the true people of the North - the Sami. It showcased an old spiritual tradition of the Sami people according to which nature is equal to man. Environmental protection and climate issues are connected to the rights of indigenous people.

My top 4/5: Maija Louekari: Veljekset

My absolute favorite installation this year brought something so dear to us Finns - the forest - to the heart of the capital city! The animation, based on the pattern designed by Maija Louekari for Finnish design house Marimekko, celebrated the centenary of Finnish independence by reflecting on the wild and exotic nature here in the North.

My top 5/5: Flowers of Life

Last but not least, mysticism and the magical glow of light could be found in this set of installations located on one of the university courtyards. Its best feature was that the spectators were able to walk through its multifaceted installations.

Did you attend the event? Have you been to a light festival? Do you ever play with light? Did you spot my fiancé & baby girl in one of the photos?

Kävitkö itse tapahtumassa? Osallistutko useasti valofestivaaleihin? Miten sinä leikit valon kanssa? Huomasitko, että sulhaseni & tyttövauvani löytyivät yhdestä kuvasta?
