My 5 favorite features of Italy

Helsinki, 5 degrees

You may have the universe if I may have Italy.

As you've probably already seen on my Instagram account, I recently visited Italy with my family. I, myself, having lived in the country for a couple of years (as an au pair in Milan, during study exchange in Castellanza and a work internship in Lignano Sabbiadoro), am very passionate about Italy. I strive to visit it as often as I can. Over the past seven years, I've managed to convince my fiancé to come with me twice before; to Lazio (Rome) & Sicily, but this was the first time we visited Milan together. This was a unique trip in many ways; partly because it was my baby girl's first trip abroad. I think it's pointless to explain why Italy is such a fascinating country, because the reasons are so evident to everyone, but in this blog post, I'll try to share my favorite features of Italy.

Any travel experience isn't complete without the use of our senses, more than in our everyday lives back home. And when it comes to senses, let me start with the sense of hearing. Some countries are quite quiet, and that is why people travel to them. Italy, however, doesn't exist without its sounds. Some Italians might say that there are quiet spots in this country too, of course. My study exchange in Italy was in a small town of 15 000 people, so I experienced a lot of silent moments there. I also remember listening to the silence at a vineyard in Tuscany once. For me, however, the Italy I know the best, is the Italy of cities where sounds play a big role. In the beginning of this week, when I was still in Italy, I remember listening at night to the sounds coming from outside our hotel. We chose a hotel that was located about 20 minutes by foot from Milan's city center. I recall listening to the sounds with a smile upon my face, because they made me feel that I truly was in Italy. There was music, song, voices, vespas, cars, laughter. Needless to say, I love the Italian language, and I think it's vital when it comes to the Italian mood. I truly love the soundscape of Italy.

Hotellimme sijaitsi n. 20 minuuttia Milanon keskustasta. Äänet eivät häirinneet minua, päinvastoin, ne saivat hymyn leviämään kasvoilleni koska niiden kautta tajusin todellakin olevani Italiassa. Kuulin musiikkia, laulua, puhetta, vespoja, autoja, naurua. On ehkä sanomattakin selvää, että rakastan italian kieltä, ja mielestäni sillä on iso merkitys Italian äänimaailmassa. Rakastan Italian äänimaailmaa.

Beauty: style & architecture / Kauneus: tyyli & arkkitehtuuri

When it comes to the next sense, sight, Italy has a lot to offer. Milan's architecture is beautiful. I love its small alleys and streets. This time, I also noticed its beautifully verdant courtyards and breathtaking gates & doorways. I even love the Italian street signs, that is how deep my love for this country extends.

Mitä tulee näköaistiin, Italialla on paljon tarjottavana. Milanon arkkitehtuuri on todella kaunis.

Fashionwise, some might say that Milan's street style is quite boring: there is a lot of black, and most dress the same way (in early spring in down jackets). However, I see the small nuances. The hats. The scarves. The shoes. The stylish older gentlemen. The old ladies who always wear skirts. Jewelry. Those kinds of things make me love Italian style & all things "Made in Italy".

Mitä tulee muotiin, niin joidenkin mielestä Milanon katutyyli on aika tylsä: suurin osa käyttää mustia vaatteita ja kaikki pukeutuvat samalla tavalla (näin alkukeväästä untuvatakkeihin). Itse huomaan kuitenkin pieniä erovaisuuksia. Hatut. Huivit. Kengät. Tyylikkäät vanhemmat miehet. Vanhemmat rouvat, jotka aina käyttävät hameita. Korut. Juuri nämä seikat saavat minut rakastamaan italialaista "Made in Italy" -tyyliä.

Food / Ruoka

There's no Italy without sense number three & four: taste & smell. Italian food is just the best, no question about it. I love the 350 different pasta, pizza, risottos, and fresh fruits that are sold on the streets. The regional treats like panzerotto. The coffee. The gelato. The chocolate. The biscuits. The salumi. The cheese. The olive oil. The bitter spirits (Campari, Aperol). The list never ends.

Italialainen ruokakulttuuri on yksinkertaisesti maailman paras. Rakastan kaikkia 350 eri pastalajeja, pizzoja, risottoja, tuoreita hedelmiä. Alueellisia herkkuja. Kahvia. Jäätelöä. Suklaata. Keksejä. Lihoja. Juustoja. Oliiviöljyä. Katkerot (Campari, Aperol). Lista sen kun jatkuu.

People & life attitude / Ihmiset & elämänasenne

I guess when it comes to senses, the Italian people stand for the sense of touch. In the end, it's quite impossible to interact with Italians without any touching. That would be seen as impolite & cold. I'm a touchy person, partly thanks to my background as a Swedish-speaking Finn (we like to hug) and partly thanks to Italy. The friendliness, positive life attitude & politeness of the Italian people is catchy.

This time, as we traveled with a baby girl, we noticed also how child-friendly Italy is. We were even stopped on the streets by strangers just because they wanted to tell us that our daughter is like a fairy "fata"! At the airport, she was called gorgeous "bellissima", and at the hotel princess "principessa". I love the warmth of the Italian people.

Memories / Muistot

Just yesterday I told a dear friend that asked me about the trip that going to Italy is like visiting a part of me. As I have spent so much time there, and visited the country so many times, the memories I have of Italy also remind me of who I used to be at the different times that I've been there. As you know, I'm a strong Helsinki-lover and very proud of my home city (something I learned to be in Italy), but I also have a deep connection to Italy. I can't explain it in a better way than to say that it's because I went there as a girl (I was merely 19 years old) and came back as a woman. Therefore, it will always have a very special place in my heart. I've had good and bad experiences there, but the good overtake the bad because it's a place away from home where I feel at home.

Näin ollen Italialla on ikuisesti tärkeä paikka sydämessäni. Italia on minulle se toinen paikka, jossa minulla on kotoisa olo.

Do you have a place away from home where you feel at home? A place that you have a deep connection with?

Onko sinulla joku toinen paikka/maa, jossa sinulla on kotoisa olo? Paikka, johon koet, että sinulla on joku tietty yhteys?

What's your opinion?

  1. I and the husband both love visiting other countries and we love being there and experiencing other cultures, other places, other lives, the whole thing. and even though I felt like crying when leaving Tenerife for example it's still the best to be at home. I love being away but I always want to come back.
anyway, I really enjoyed your post about Italy. it gave me so much useful information about the country in addition to your personal feelings and thoughts. I think it was very well written. oh and by the way, only Adriatic Sea is separating me from Italy for a week since tomorrow!
