Nordic interior essential: monochromatic nomad rug

Helsinki, 6 degrees

I have always thought that people are, by nature, nomadic, but they’ve built up anti-human constructs to keep them in place.

For years now, I've been looking for the perfect monochromatic nomad rug for our home because I've seen this type of rug in many Nordic interior magazines, and on Pinterest, and I instantly thought that one would perfectly fit into our home. Since my baby girl's birth, I've noticed how much time we daily spend playing on the floor, hence the bruises on my knees, so I recently decided it was time to introduce this Nordic interior essential to our home. Before, for some reason, we didn't have any bigger rug in our living room because we thought it would only make the space look smaller. Now, however, I think it combines all our furniture and makes the room look cosier.

I found it natural to place our monochromatic nomad rug named Tanger from Swedish Ellos in our living room as it as I mentioned ties together our furniture there.

The most famous monochromatic nomad rugs are naturally the valuable Moroccan Beni Ouarain carpets that are woven from undyed natural wool and traditionally decorated with brown/grey/black geometric designs. According to Beyond Marrakech, these magnificent rugs have the fascinating ability to connect the long history of the nomadic Berber tribes with modern day interiors.

Domotex explains well why they have found their way into Nordic homes: "These carpets are probably so popular because they match any interior, from fresh Scandinavian style, to refined classic design or even a cozy rustic look. In an eclectic interior, they can tie everything together. You don’t tire of them so quickly, and you don’t need to replace all of your textile accessories when you buy one. In short: Beni Ouarains are the jeans of modern interior design. Of course, modernist and mid-century designers were already fans of the rugs. Genuine Beni Ouarains are hand-woven from the thick wool of highland sheep. And each is unique, the shapes and patterns vary."

Some say that these rugs are a new trend in the Nordics, but Sukhirugs showcases that it isn't so: "These beautiful monochromatic tribal rugs are perfect for several kind of styles. Their neutral colour palette works well with other neutrals but also with bolder hues. They are also a perfect way to warm up a room and to add a little texture with their geometric pattern. Then, just looking back in the history of architecture, these carpets already appeared in Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto homes!" For those of you who aren't that familiar with him yet, Helsinki-based Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is by far the best known Finnish architect of all times.

Have you seen monochromatic nomad rugs like this before? What do you think about them? Yay or nay?

Oletko törmännyt vastaaviin paimentolaismattoihin? Mitä mieltä olet niistä? Hyvä vai huono?

What's your opinion?
