Hanami 2017

Helsinki, 18 degrees

The cherry blossom represents the fragility and the beauty of life. It's a reminder that life is almost overwhelmingly beautiful but that it is also tragically short.

With the thought that it's better to do something rather late than never, in this blog post I'll share some photos of this year's Hanami - the annual cherry blossom viewing picnic in Helsinki. I've written about Hanami before on the blog, if you've missed the blog posts, you'll find them here. The event took place on Sunday May 21. This year was the first year I took my baby girl to see the beautiful cherry blossom trees. In the Roihuvuori district of Helsinki we have a total of 240 cherry blossom trees! Over the years, it has been a tradition of my sister and me to enjoy a picnic while watching the flowers. We continued with the tradition this year, but now with our baby girls (my niece is four months younger than my baby girl).

When approaching the trees, for me the sensation is like seeing true eye-candy. Almost like seeing a huge amount of cotton candy! The blossoms are seductive and extremely captivating - I can spend hours watching them. As the tradition goes, we dressed for the occasion - in pink. I wore an Italian silk scarf that my mother has given me (in her honor) and a pink playsuit. It was a truly beautiful day with wonderfully sunny & warm weather, and despite the fact that the event had grown really big (there were thousands of people in the park), we had an amazing day together.

Have you been to a Hanami picnic? Do you enjoy the cherry blossoms? Do you have a favorite place to view them?

Oletko itse osallistunut Hanami -juhlaan? Pidätkö kirsikankukista? Onko sinulla suosikkipaikkaa, jossa käyt niitä ihastelemassa?
