Autumn hygge with Muurla's Moomin Candle

There was so much to talk about that nothing was said. It was warm sitting there on the steps. Everything seemed to be so right.

After the sad happenings of last Friday in Finland, I've felt an increased need for the cosiness. Late August evenings are ideal for that. As I mentioned already last year in this earlier blog post, I love this time of year, when it's allowed to stay at home and bundle oneself up on the sofa together with one's loved ones. Blankets, candles, hot cups of tea, woolen socks. I've understood the true value of autumn as I have my sweet family to cuddle up with. The Danish have a great word for this warm sensation, hygge. In Swedish, mys is quite a good word for it as well as it stands for cuddling/snuggling. I guess the closest Finnish words would be kotoilu, myhäily and/or hölläily, but they're not as strong as the other two examples. If you ask me, coziness adds to one's wellness, and is therefore very important!

Perjantain surullisten tapahtumien jälkeen olen itse kaivannut kotoilua tavanomaisempaa enemmän. Elokuuillat ovat täydellisiä kotoiluun. Kuten mainitsin jo viime vuonna tässä aikaisemmassa blogikirjoituksessa, niin pidän kovasti tästä vuodenajasta, jolloin on salittua jäädä kotiin ja kääriytyä rakkaiden kanssa lämpöiseen vilttiin ja vajota sohvan pehmeään syliin. Kynttilät, kuumat teemukit, villasukat. Vasta nyt ymmärrän syksyn arvon kun saan makoilla sohvalla perheeni kanssa. Tanskalaiset käyttää tätä lämmintä tunnelmaa varten osuvaa sanaa, hygge. Ruotsiksi taas käytetään sanaa mys. Suomeksi ei vastaavaa sanaa oikein löydy, mutta ehkä sanat myhäily ja/tai hölläily avaavat sitä jotenkin. Mielestäni kotoilu lisää ihmisen hyvinvointia, ja on siksi jokaiselle hyvin tärkeä asia!

This fall we get to cuddle up with a Moomin character, what's better than that? Tänä syksynä saamme kotoilla muumihahmon kanssa,mikä voisi olla sen parempaa? Tein hiljattain blogiyhteistyötä kotimaisen Muurlan kanssa ja tässä blogikirjoituksessa esittelen yrityksen Muumipappa -kynttilän. Kynttilällä on hauska hattumuotoinen sammuttajakansi, jolla tukahdutat kynttilän sammuksiin turvallisesti (arvioitu paloaika 20h). Muistat ehkä, että olen maininnut Muurlan myös tässä aikaisemmassa blogikirjoituksessa. Pidän erityisesti Muurlan lasi- ja emalituotteista. Tämä on kyllä tänä syksynä suosikkikynttilämme, jos minulta kysytään. Kun tuoksuton kynttilä on palannut loppuun, voi purkkia käyttää pienten aarteiden säilytysrasiana. I chose the Moominpappa candle because of the character's personal meaning for me. You know, each Finn has at least once in their life thought about which Moomin character he/she is. I believe that the Moomin characters aren't attached to their sex, as I think that wasn't such an important thing to separate for the author Tove Jansson. She often mentioned that she herself had characteristics of both female and male characters. So despite the fact that Moominpappa is a male character, I think I have a lot in common with him. Mainly the fact that I'm also a ponderer, dreamer, story lover, and sea lover. Having said this, he also reminds me of my dear passed father, so that is another level of this character that speaks to me. I guess every mother would like to be like Moominmamma, and as good as everybody wants to be as adventurous and mysterious as Snufkin, but I feel that I'm a combination of Moominpappa and the Snorkmaiden. At least for the moment.


Valitsin Muumipappa -kynttilän koska tämä hahmo on erityisen tärkeä minulle. Jokainen on varmasti ainakin kerran miettinyt mitä muumihahmoa muistuttaa. Uskon, etteivät muumihahmot ole niin vahvasti sidottuja sukupuoliinsa. Näin, koska koen, ettei sukupuolierottelu ollut Tove Janssonillekaan niin tärkeä asia. Hän kertoi itse monta kertaa, että hänessä oli samankaltaisuuksia monen eri hahmon kanssa - sekä nais- että mieshahmojen kanssa. Joten vaikka Muumipappa on mieshahmo, niin koen, että meillä on paljon yhteistä. Kuten hän, myös minä olen pohdiskelija ja unelmoija, ja pidän kovasti tarinoista ja merestä. Tämän sanottua, niin minun on kuitenkin lisättävä, että hahmo muistuttaa minua myös rakkaasta edesmenneestä isästäni, eli tässä hahmossa on monta tasoa, jotka puhuttelevat minua. Luultavasti jokainen äiti toivoisi olevansa kuin Muumimamma, ja miltein kaikki haluaisivat olla yhtä seikkailuhaluisia ja salaperäisiä kuin Nuuskamuikkunen, mutta itse koen, että olen yhdistelmä Muumipappaa ja Niiskuneitiä. Ainakin tällä hetkellä.
