The Helsinki Book

Helsinki, 10 degrees

"There are no rights, no wrongs, there's no rocket science involved or any mind blowing revelations to be made here. The idea is simply to share my hometown with you, the way I see it."

When I returned to work about two months ago, a book was waiting for me at my desk. It was a book I had heard about before going on maternity leave, so I was looking forward to reading it. I was happily surprised when I received a personal note from the author himself in my copy. When one sees the title of the book, one immediately understands why I personally wanted to read it. Bearing the name of my beloved home city, The Helsinki Book, it's quite obvious, I think. Like the author, Marc Aulén, says here above in his quote, this book is his so called easy Helsinki package to anyone, who would like to know what's special about this city from a local perspective. Marc himself is known for many things, especially for his delicious soups. Hence the nickname "the soup man". So what did The Helsinki Book give to someone like me - who promotes Helsinki on a daily basis for work?

My answer is that it reminded me of the fact that Helsinki's best asset is its locals. For work, I personally meet international visitors on a weekly basis, and have my chance to explain to them what I think makes Helsinki so special. The strengths of this book is the same that come out of my encounters: personal stories, funny & informative details, the local relationship to nature and cultural & historical heritage.

My absolute favorite spread in the book must be the one telling about the Moomins that I've mentioned many times in my blog. This, because it introduced a handwritten letter from Tove Jansson herself to Marc! Priceless, what an honor!

Miksi? Koska se esittelee käsin kirjoitetun kirjeen, jonka Marc on aikoinaan saanut itse Tove Janssonilta! Mikä kunnia!

I also enjoyed the section in the book called "Get Lost" because I always emphasize that a city is not to be discovered by making must-see lists, but by allowing oneself to in a sense get lost and find places one didn't expect to stumble upon. Some of the jogging routes, here pictures underneath, were also very good! Finally, as a huge fan of the local food culture, I loved the spread about local delicacies.

I also started thinking about my relationship to travel books. I love reading good travel books, and I have from time to time read books about some destinations I've been to. However, I'm also a strong believer in the digital world of recommendation, and as I have lots of friends who travel much more than I do, I often ask for their advice when traveling. I think the best travel book would be one that could combine the two, and that would be interactive somehow. One of my favorite Helsinki books is one that gives the reader different tasks to do in town. In this way, one can mark when one has done a specific task. The possibility to make own personal notes & observations I think is something that will never lose its importance.

How do you feel about guide and/or books? Do you ever read them when traveling?

    1. Yes, it's always better to get hints from locals. What you find online is never the whole truth.

  2. I am amazed by this book and I didn't know about the "soup man", and this i bad, because I myself love soups! I loved this Helsinki book, it is "his" Helsinki, as he wrote (Welcome to "my" Helsinki) and I really think it's brilliant and a very beautiful book. I loved the quote in the beginning - "there's no right or wrong", something I answered you today (You may have received it and already read it - I felt so ashamed that I left important things behind one of my posts! And you triggered a number of thoughts that will be useful to an academic work I am writing - we cannot be partial and I sounded so!) So the more I read your review about the book you received, the more I like it. I like travel books sometimes, but with a different twist and this one seems to have it. I am about to g to Helsinki for ages, and am always postponing, for several reasons; I always rely on your blog to learn about the city and now this book together seems to be a perfect combination! Hope you enjoy the day! XXX
