The perfect Nordic nursery

Helsinki, 13 degrees

This is the real secret of life - to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.

To continue on my earlier blog post about ideas for creating the perfect Nordic nusery, I thought it was time for a nursery tour. So take a step inside of my toddler girl's room, and enjoy the ride!

Jatkaakseni aikaisempaa blogikirjoitusta, jossa pallotelin pohjoismaalaisilla lastenhuoneen ideoilla, niin ajattelin tässä kirjoituksessa esitellä tyttäreni tämänhetkisen huoneen. Joten kävele sisään, ja näe, koe ja nauti!

Sea-theme / Meriteema

As I mentioned in the earlier blog post, my toddler girl's nursery has a sea theme. It can be seen a combination of things and sub-themes: under the sea, nautical, maritime, Helsinki, the Baltic Sea. In her Swedish String shelf, it can be seen as sea shells, a sea-themed Moomin poster, a knitted octopussy (here a common first toy for babies thanks to its tentacles that babies love touching), a sea gull soft toy, a local Kehvola (design by Timo Mänttäri) postcard of Helsinki's Market Square, a fishing rod + fish and a sea rock that my girl chose herself when we once visited the nearby sea. It can also be seen in the Moomin lighthouse that she has on one of her trunks. In addition, it can be seen in the bunting fabric banner she has hanging in her room, as well as in her swan hanger, mobile, rocking boat and some soft toys. Also, it's visible in the patchwork quilt in her crib.

Kuten mainitsin aikaisemmassa blogikirjoituksessa, niin tyttäreni huoneella on meriteema. Se näkyy yhdistelmänä monesta alateemasta: mm. Pieni merenneito, merenkulku, Helsinki, Itämeri. Hänen ruotsalaisessa String -hyllyssään se näkyy simpukkoina, meriteemaisena Muumi-julisteena, turvalonkerona, lokkipehmona, kotimaisen Kehvolan (Timo Mänttärin suunnittelema) Kauppatori -postikorttina, onkina + kalana, ja kivenä, jonka tyttäreni valitsi kun kävimme kerran meriretkellä. Meriteeman huomaa myös Muumi -majakasta. Tämän lisäksi teema näkyy lippuviirissä, joutsenhenkarissa, mobilessa, keinulaivassa ja joissakin pehmoeläimissä. Siskoni tekemässä tilkkutäkissä teema näkyy myös.

Nordic nature / Luonto

Alongside the sea, we also wanted to introduce our toddler girl to other elements of Nordic nature. The biggest source of inspiration for this was the Adventure Rug by Danish OYOY. Thanks to the features on the rug, our girl's room include bears, mountains, mushrooms and a teepee play tent.

Up in the air / Yläilmoissa

I wanted my toddler girl to have a room that would be fun, also taking into consideration its ceiling and curtains. Here the biggest inspirational piece are her curtains that are from Swedish IKEA. Thanks to them, the room is filled with different kinds of clouds (as cushions, on her lamp, in front of the windows, on posters), but also a small airplane and some rabbits (which on her curtains are flying the airplanes).

Sense of localness / Paikallisuuden tunne

Finally, there are many elements in my toddler girl's room that speak of the fact that it's a nursery set in Helsinki, Finland. There are some Kokoro & Moi – World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 building blocks of famous local landmarks, Finnish children's clothing from e.g. Vimma, Marimekko, Valkama and Papu, and lots of Moomins. In my girl's room, the Moomin characters appear in the room's decoration: in a house shelf & piggy bank, on seasonal wall art and posters, but also in play: in books, soft & crib toys, as well as a play house & lighthouse.

What do you think are the essentials in a Nordic nursery? Are we still missing something crucial?

Mitkä ovat sinun mielestä lastenhuoneen kulmakivet? Puuttuuko mielestäsi jotain oleellista tyttömme huoneesta?
