5 x must-sees in Christmas Helsinki

Helsinki, 0 degrees

Christmas lights instantly make me feel like eight years old again...

Helsinki is always beautiful, but for the Christmas season, it dresses up in the most wonderful lights! Knowing a little bit about their background, thanks to my job, I couldn't be prouder of the people behind the lights - my city has never looked as pretty for Christmas as it does this year! The Christmas feeling is so tangible that it's simply lovely to walk around the downtown area of Helsinki this time of year. Here are my personal hints on what places not to miss!

Helsinki on aina kaunis, mutta jouluksi kaupunki pukeutuu valoon, mikä tekee siitä entistä upeamman! Koska tiedän työni puolesta hieman valojen taustatyöstä, en voisi olla ylpeämpi kotikaupungistani - mielestäni kaupunki ei ole koskaan näyttänyt näin hyvältä jouluna! Joulutunnelman oikein tuntee ja on ihanaa kävellä keskustan alueella valoja ihmettelemässä. Tässä viisi vinkkiä jouluiseen Helsinkiin!

Kluuvikatu

Kluuvikatu Street is known for many things: one of the oldest & prestigious hotels & restaurants in town (Hotel Kämp), Paulig's Café Paulig Kulma (directly translated Paulig's corner) that has a cute giant snow lantern in front of it and the Kluuvi shopping center, but my absolute favorite place on the street is the Fazer Café (as seen in the first photo of this blog post). It sure is one of my happy places in town with its Christmas display and delicious chocolate treats inside!

Esplanade Park / Esplanadin puisto

There is always a reason to visit the catwalk of the city! This Christmas season, there are especially two: the Christmas lights (the amazing reindeer & Christmas tree) and the refugee pop up café & shop Nuur on the Espa Stage!

Helsingin ns. catwalkilla on aina mukava taivaltaa, mutta joulukautena siihen on kaksi erityisen hyvää syytä: jouluvalot (ihanat porot ja joulukuusi) sekä pakolaisten pitämä pop up -kahvila ja -kauppa Nuur Espan lavalla!

Aleksanterinkatu

Aleksanterinkatu is our main shopping street so it needs no explanation why it's worth a visit this season, but I would recommend visiting two Christmas shops on it (just as a start): TRE Christmas Market & Xmas Garage!

Aleksanterinkadulta löytyy aina hyviä ostosmahdollisuuksia, mutta suosikkini tänä joulukautena ovat ehdottomasti TRE Christmas Market & Xmas Garage!

Helsinki Christmas Market / Tuomaan Markkinat

The Helsinki Christmas Market has done it again! It's by far the prettiest Christmas Market I've seen with its cottages, great carousel, Christmas tree, and lights! I would also mention that it has a great food selection this season, yummy!

Winter War Memorial / Talvisodan muistomerkki - Valontuoja

Something that is not even related to Christmas, but worth seeing during this dark period of the year with less than six hours of daylight, is one of the newest sculptures in town (the finished work was unveiled at Kasarmitori Square on November 30, 2017)! The National Memorial to the Winter War by Pekka Kauhanen is made of stainless steel, and its base contains 105 photographs of the Winter War. The pictures shed light on the background of the war, the events of the war, the home front, international aid, women's roles, and the end of the war. The pictures focus on the contributions and fate of individual men and women. I was very impressed by this sculpture, as I was by Kauhanen's ongoing exhibition at the Helsinki Art Museum. I warmly recommend both!

Tämä vinkki ei ehkä liity suoranaisesti jouluun, mutta se kannattaa kuitenkin käydä katsomassa vuoden pimeämpään aikaan! Helsingin uusin veistos - Talvisodan kansallinen muistomerkki - on vaikuttava! Valmis teos paljastettiin Helsingin Kasarmitorilla 30.11 2017.

What kind of Christmas lights do you like in an urban surrounding?

Minkälaisista jouluvaloista sinä pidät kaupunkiympäristössä?

What's your opinion?

  1. They don't do much here since the city is so much spread out. Only the core of downtown will be festive

  2. I so wish to visit Kluuvikatu and Aleksanterinkatu now! I know Helsinki through you posts and the more I see, the more I want to go there! Also, I remember that when I lived in Germany there was a Finish Christmas market and it was sooo amazing! I can see the beauty of everything now in your pictures! Hope you have a very nice Christmas!
