The perfect art print: Jessica van der Hilst's outer space

Helsinki, -12 degrees

A head full of fears has no space for dreams.

Lately, I've been fascinated by art. Growing up, we had a variety of art in my childhood home - both my parents loved the sea so much of the art was related to that theme, but we also had some classic art subjects present, like fruit and flower arrangements. When my parents passed away, I didn't feel like much of the art that my parents had kept suited my home. I'm still looking for the right place in our home for the only painting I chose for myself, actually. My parents were not familiar with the minimalistic home interior style, so one could say that my home now is very different from the home I grew up in. Intentionally, it is.

Viime aikoina taide on kiehtonut minua kovasti.

At some point, I think I was a teenager at that time, I remember reacting to the quantity of things and lack of color coordination that we had at home. I even felt an urge to cleanse the home, but wasn't allowed to, of course. When I moved out, that is when the change started to happen. Still, my first rental apartments resembled my childhood home in some way - at least in the color use. It's only now, in my current home, that I've been able to find the balance and harmony between a minimalistic approach (black, white, grey) and adding some color to it. We usually have one or two effect color at a time. However, lately I've found myself missing the plentiful art we had in my childhood home. Therefore, recently I began to search for a piece of effect art for our living room.

Nykyään meillä on 1-2 tehosteväriä kerrallaan. Kaipaan kuitenkin silloin tällöin väririkasta taidetta, jota meillä oli lapsuuskodissani. Näin ollen aloin hiljattain etsimään tehostetaideteosta olohuoneeseemme.

I don't remember my mother ever talking about space. My father on the other hand I do remember mentioning it. He liked stars and especially admiring them on dark nights in midst of nature. I, myself, have always been fascinated by space. I've even written about it earlier on the blog. So therefore it might come as no surprise that it was an art print of outer space that caught my attention on Etsy.

The art print is based on the original watercolor painting "Stellar nursery" by Australian Jessica van der Hilst. It features a circular window into a nebula (sometimes called a stellar nursery), richly colored in violets, magentas, and turquoises. It's sprinkled with stars and with speckled color spilling into the white space. Van der Hilst explains that it could appeal to people interested in astronomy, the night sky, abstract art, or simply dreamers - so needless to say, it's perfect for me.

The artist herself is also a writer, and as I mentioned, she's located on the south coast of NSW, Australia. She loves colors and the wonder of nature. After much prodding from family and friends, she opened an Etsy store so that she could share originals and prints of her watercolor paintings with the world. Jessica loves watercolor art because of its loose, playful nature. Watching the colors interact on the paper is a joy, and she says she's still learning every day.

I need hints and tips, where do you get your art? How do you find the right kind of art for your home?

Kaipaan ideoita ja vinkkejä, mistä sinä ostat taiteesi? Miten löydät oikeanlaista taidetta kotiisi?

What's your opinion?

  1. We only have one piece of art, we found a chinese artist who made things for a shoppe near our house. We just happened to stumble across it

  2. I loved the print and the fact that the artist said it appeals to astronomy lovers and dreamers - very good for me! I was the opposite of you! My parents liked a Scandi look for home, which was very elegant and I wanted to put some color in our house and wasn't allowed to, of course, not even to my bedroom. So when I moved, I wanted a place full, but really full of color and nothing coordinated, intentionally :) I loved to read your post, I identified myself so much with it! Hope you have a beautiful week!
