Coming up: Helsinki Coffee Festival

Helsinki, 2 degrees

Start your day with a smile and a cup of coffee.

This week, I received an interesting email talking about the myths related to coffee. The email was really an advertisement for an upcoming event, the Helsinki Coffee Festival, which will be held on April 20-22, but I thought it was delicious: at the same time it reminded me of the super interesting event (biggest in the Nordics!) coming up, as it taught me many new things! Great marketing, if you ask me!

I was surprised to notice how little I've written about coffee on my blog during its 10-year-long history: only once in 2011, only once in 2012, once in 2013, once in 2014 and once in 2015! Surprised, because I love coffee so much! I guess it's no wonder as we Finns do drink the most coffee in the world! I don't know if that is the reason, I actually think I learned to drink coffee in Italy. Having said this, I remember learning how to drink it when I came back to Finland. We have such great baristas in Helsinki that really know their coffee and challenge their customers to truly enjoy this wonderful beverage. I've told you before on the blog, in this earlier blog post back in 2013, that I've struggled with coffee because I'm quite small in size so strong espresso-based coffee does have a strong effect on me. However, recently I heard from food & health coach Cecilia Portnoj of Lagom Health that I'm perfectly allowed to drink one cup of espresso-based coffee a day, if that is my thing. She didn't even find it to be such a serious addiction. But back to the myths!

  1. It doesn't matter if you measure coffee with a table spoon / Annostelen kahvin ruokalusikalla, ei sillä niin väliä.
The right measurements are some of the most important elements of good coffee. The right amount is 6 grams of coffee per deciliter, says Lari Salomaa from the Swedish coffee roastery Johan & Nyström / ”Oikeat mittasuhteet ovat hyvän kahvin yksi tärkeimmistä elementeistä. Nyrkkisääntö on, että kahvia mitataan 6 grammaa desilitraa kohden. Yleensä kahvilaitteiden mukana tulee oikean kokoinen mittalusikka, josta näkee grammamääränkin”, kertoo maajohtaja Lari Salomaa, kahvipaahtimo Johan & Nyströmiltä.
  2. By adding a higher quantity of coffee, you make it stronger. / Lisäämällä määrällisesti enemmän kahvipuruja kahvista tulee vahvempaa.
By adding coffee, you don't get stronger coffee, but more bitter and worse coffee. If you want stronger coffee, you should use dark roast coffee beans.
  3. You should always fill the water reservoir with the coffee machine's own glass decanter / carafe. / Kahvinkeittimen vesisäiliö täytetään keittimen omalla kannulla.
Water should always be filled with another decanter / carafe so that the coffee machine gathers less grease and it stays cleaner, says Tiina Airola, Country Manager of Moccamaster. / ”Vesi kannattaa aina kaataa erillisellä kannulla keittimeen. Näin kahvinkeittimeen kertyy vähemmän rasvaa, ja se pysyy paremmin puhtaana”, kertoo Tiina Airola, Moccamasterin maajohtaja.
  4. Coffee should be kept / stored in the fridge. / Kahvi säilyy paremmin jääkaapissa.
The fridge temperature might be a good idea when it comes to storing coffee, but it's not recommended as the coffee will catch aromas from other food items in the cold. I don't think anyone want coffee that tastes like blue cheese or fish, says Salomaa.
  5. When you run out of coffee filters, you can use toilet paper or paper towels. / Suodatinpaperin loppuessa voi käyttää talous- tai WC-paperia.
Filters matter, because they affect the taste of coffee. I always recommend moisturizing the filter before adding the grinded coffee onto it - this way the taste of the paper doesn't get into the coffee as much, Salomaa continues. / ”Suodatinpaperilla on väliä, sillä se vaikuttaa kahvin makuun. Suosittelisin myös aina kastelemaan suodatinpaperin vedellä ennen kahvipurujen lisäämistä, jolloin paperin makua irtoaa kahviin vähemmän”, Salomaa jatkaa.

  6. You can measure coffee and water into the coffee machine long before actually making the coffee, this doesn't affect the taste.
Coffee should always be fresh when made, and one should make the exact amount of it that one intends to drink. The longer coffee stays in the coffee machine's carafe, the worse it tastes. The water should be fresh and cold, and the grinded coffee should also be as fresh as possible, says Airola.
  7. You can clean the coffee machine with vinegar. / Kahvinkeittimen voi puhdistaa etikalla.
One should clean a coffee machine once every two weeks with its own cleanser that removes grease. The coffee machine parts should be washed on a daily basis in the dishwasher, says Airola. Also calcium remover should be used on a regular basis. / ”Kahvinkeitin tulee puhdistaa kunnolla mieluiten kerran kahdessa viikossa kahvinkeittimen puhdistukseen tarkoitetulla ja kahvirasvaan tehoavalla puhdistusaineella. Keittimen osat kannattaa puhdistaa päivittäin miedolla astianpesuaineella. Myös kalkinpoisto tulee suorittaa säännöllisesti”, kertoo Airola.

    What's your opinion?

    1. Believe it or not, I've never had coffee. I've been thinking about trying ice coffee, but as expensive as they are, perhaps not.

      1. Haha, you wouldn't last long in Finland! I'm joking of course. It would be interesting to know the story behind the fact that you've never tried the most drank beverage in the world.
