Summer holiday hints for Helsinki 3/3: Museums (&Islands) +1

Helsinki, 20 degrees

A visit to a museum is a search for beauty, truth and meaning in our lives.

To finalize my blog post series, I thought that I would share the last holiday hints for my city. The best feature about any kind of holiday is the fact that you lose sense of time, and can really enjoy yourself in a hurry-free manner. Helsinki is an excellent summer city (actually, the city is excellent in all four seasons) with tons of activities! Here are some of my favorites this summer!

Helsinki on loistava kesäkaupunki (oikeastaan kaupunki on loistava paikka ympäri vuoden) lukuisine aktiviteetteineen! Tässä joitakin suosikkeja tämän kesän osalta!
National Museum of Finland / Kansallismuseo

Oh, happy day for a toddler girl and mother! The National Museum of Finland's Barbie the Icon exhibition (on until August 26, 2018) was a hit, according to us two! My daughter's favorites included the riding Barbie, Barbie in a swing and of course the Barbie dollhouse that she could play with! My personal favorites were the one & only Audrey Hepburn, the Coca Cola, the Italian Barbie to name a few. Despite the fact that my daughter enjoyed the exhibition, I didn't get her a Barbie doll yet. She has been playing with my old one though, that I received 10 years ago as a birthday present from my fellow Erasmus students in Italy. Note that this museum also has an excellent permanent exhibition worth seeing!

Huom!

Didrichsen Museum / Didrichsenin taidemuseo

"We hope that our little museum will remain the home of everything beautiful: art, architecture,  nature and music and that it will give others as much joy as it has given us.”
-Marie-Louise and Gunnar Didrichsen, 1968

One of my absolute favorite museums in Helsinki is for sure the Didrichsen Art Museum! Read more about its past exhibition mentioned on the blog here. This year's summer exhibition (on 'til September 9, 2018) at the museum did not let me down! It presents the Swedish interior design company Svenskt Tenn and its history. It is the first exhibition ever dedicated to Svenskt Tenn in an art museum in Finland. I loved it!

Didrichsenin taidemuseo on jo kauan kuulunut suosikkeihini Helsingissä!

Suomenlinna Toy Museum / Suomenlinnan lelumuseo

It had been years since my last visit here, but I have to say that I look at museums in a completely new way now that I have my daughter with me. It was fascinating to see what items interested her, as they at some points were totally different than the ones that I liked the most. My absolute favorite at the Suomenlinna Toy Museum was the Moomin figures, of course. I mean, look at them! At the time, I would have loved to know their story, though. With my toddler girl it was impossible to concentrate & read the handout. But! I actually was in contact with the museum after our visit, and I'll dedicate an upcoming blog post to tell you the story behind these dolls! Needless to say, a visit to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress Island is always a good idea as the island is magical! The museum is not open only during summer, but during a couple of periods of the year it is closed, so please check its opening hours before going!

Seurasaari Open-Air Museum / Seurasaaren ulkomuseo

One of my Helsinki favorites is definitely Seurasaari Island! Growing up, I used to take my #sister and/or childhood dog here often, and I always found the island both fascinating & magical! This summer I took my toddler girl to experience Seurasaari Open-Air Museum for the first time - and she loved it! The museum consists of old, mainly rural wooden buildings transplanted from elsewhere in Finland and placed in the dense forest landscape of the island. Despite the visitors, the island has a variety of wildlife, especially birds, but also red squirrels and hares - we met birds & squirrels and had the chance to feed them some bread & nuts. High recommendation! Note, this is a summer season museum, and the season ends on September 15. However, it's possible to visit the island throughout the year even though the museum buildings are closed.

Yksi suosikkipaikoistani Helsingissä on ehdottomasti Seurasaari! Huom! Kyse on kesämuseosta, jonka kausi päättyy 15.9. Saari on kuitenkin auki ympäri vuoden vaikka museorakennukset eivät ole auki yleisölle.

+ Vanhankaupunginlahti Bay, Lammassaari Island & Kuusiluoto Islet / Vanhankaupunginlahti, Lammassaari ja Kuusiluoto

I already told you about this breathtaking place in an earlier post, but I thought I would mention it in this one as well, as it belonged to the places I spent my holiday at and it includes not only one island but also an islet!
