Lux Helsinki 2015

Helsinki, -5 degrees

May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.

According to me, the most simple ideas are the best! When it's winter and we only have around 5-6 hours of light (daylight), we crave light. The light festival Lux Helsinki always comes around like a blessing and delights locals and visitors alike with enchanting light installations and artwork. Light can truly take so many forms. You can find my earlier blog posts about Lux Helsinki here and here. This year my favorite pieces of art were OVO, Lantern Park, Anonymous and Fire Circus Walkea. Lux Helsinki ended on January 8.

On ihana huomata miten erilaista valoa on olemassa. Joka vuosi Lux Helsinki esittelee uusia valomuotoja. Löydät aikaisemmat blogikirjoitukseni Lux Helsingistä tästä ja tästä. Tänä vuonna suosikkiteokseni olivat OVO, Lantern Park, Anonymous ja Fire Circus Walkea. Lux Helsinki päättyi 8. päivä tammikuuta.

The wooden-based light installation OVO was situated in the rear yard of the Hakasalmi Villa. Viewers could enter the installation, where they were surrounded by its light animation and soundscape. The work is shaped like an egg – a global symbol of new life. The atmospheric Lantern Park came to life this year in the intimate environs of the courtyard of the Topelia Block, located on the grounds of the University of Helsinki. The work featured over a hundred lanterns: in addition to those familiar from previous years, there were new lanterns prepared by students of art and design.

Puurakenteinen valoteos OVO sijoittui Hakasalmen huvilan takapihalle.

Anonymous turned Finlandia Hall into a communications tool. This light artwork offered viewers the chance to present their own, apparently invisible and anonymous, opinions. Using light-based expression, it visualized the speaker's voice and movements, creating an abstract projection of light in motion on the facade of Finlandia Hall. The light did not reveal who was inside the cube. Fire Circus Walkea combined the worlds of fire-based circus acts and dance into a unique package in the historical surrounds of Senate Square.

Did you visit Lux Helsinki? What were your favorite pieces? How do you feel about light art?

Kävitkö itse Lux Helsingissä? Mikä oli suosikkiteoksesi? Mitä mieltä olet yleisesti valotaiteesta?

  2. that oval or egg-shape installation looks the coolest. reminds me of the candles that change their colours. but those with wigs and dresses look scary... like something from a horror film. oh and the last one with human movement is cool too!

    1. Haha, I like that the wigs and dresses look scary! They were on a courtyard so it was perfect!
