5 tips for organizing a unique Baptism

Helsinki, 20 degrees

Precious one, so small, so sweet, dancing in on angel feet. Straight from heaven's brightest star, what a miracle you are!

About two weeks ago, our dear baby girl finally received her name, in an official manner. After contemplating about it for about a month's time, we decided to have her Baptism in church. Initially, I wanted to have the Baptism somewhere else, in a less formal surrounding. However, in the end, I couldn't be happier with how this special event was put into practice. I'm most thankful for the people that were involved, as a Baptism is truly an event of genuine love - and I'm sure our baby girl could feel the warmth of this event thanks to the people who attended it through their priceless presence and support. Here follow my five tips on how to make a Baptism a truly unique milestone in life.

Location / Sijainti

First thing first. After having decided on having the Baptism in church, we had to find the right one. On the same piece of paper on which we received our baby girl's social security number, we also received information about my home parish. To be honest, I hadn't thought about it since my confirmation back in 2002. Since I'm a Swedish speaking Finn, it's not directly determined by the neighborhood we live in, but, however, it's the closest Swedish speaking parish to our district. There are three Swedish speaking parishes in Helsinki, and 18 Finnish speaking ones. I belong to the St. John's parish that has four main churches: Kallio Church, St John's Church, Old Church and St Jacob's Church. Out of these churches, we selected the St. John's Church as it had a parish floor, with a hall where we could have our Baptism party (coffee & cake) for friends and family after the actual Baptism. Despite the fact that the church scared me in the beginning due to its size (I've only been to large concerts for hundreds of people held in this specific church before), I must say that I couldn't be happier with our choice. The church is a true landmark in Helsinki with its two towers. Representing the neogothic style, it is the largest stone church in Finland.

Kyseinen kirkko torneineen on todellinen maamerkki Helsingissä. Uusgoottilaista tyyliä edustava pyhäkkö on Suomen suurin kivikirkko.

St. John's Church was completed already in 1891 on top of the Punanotko hill, on the outskirts of the city at the time. The church was designed by Swedish Adolf Emil Melander. The cathedral-style St. John's Church is nowadays located in southern Helsinki. The floor plan is cross-shaped. The impressive exterior is characterised by a massive granite footing and red brick brickwork. The two 74-metre towers rise at the north-eastern end, above the main entrance. Next to the main entrance, there's a statue by sculptor Kari Juva of John the Baptist, dating back to 2003. Inside, numerous chandeliers and sconces light up the church. You can read more about the church here. The parish floor was conveniently located on the second floor of the building next to the church.

Punanotkon kukkulalle silloisen kaupungin laitamille valmistui Johanneksenkirkko jo vuonna 1891. Kirkon on suunnitellut tukholmalainen Adolf Emil Melander. Upea katedraalimainen Johanneksenkirkko sijaitsee eteläisessä Helsingissä Kaartinkaupungin ja Punavuoren kaupunginosien rajalla. Pohjapiirros on ristin muotoinen. Vaikuttavaa ulkoasua leimaavat jykevä graniittisokkeli ja punatiilimuuraus. Koillispäädyssä, pääsisäänkäynnin yläpuolella, nousevat kirkon kaksi noin 74 metrin korkuista tornia. Kirkon pääsisäänkäynnin vieressä on kuvanveistäjä Kari Juvan Johannes Kastajaa kuvaava patsas vuodelta 2003. Kirkon sisällä valoa tuovat useat kattokruunut ja lampetit. Invitation & program / Kutsu & ohjelma

To invite the guests to our baby girl's Baptism, I made an invitation that had watercolor flowers on it as decoration. We used the same floral theme for the Baptism program (flyers) that we handed out in the church. I had found the free watercolor floral themes online on blogs. You can find similar ones on Pinterest here.

Ristiäisiä varten tein kutsun, jossa oli vesivärikukkasia koristeina. Käytimme samaa kukkaisteemaa myös kasteohjelmassa, jonka jaoimme kirkossa vieraille. Löysin maksuttomat vesivärikukkateemat blogeista. Löydät vastaavia Pinterestistä täältä.

Decoration & memorable activities / Koristeet & aktiviteetit

For decorating the parish floor, we used the letter banner from MiniOnes that I introduced in my earlier blog post, and pom poms that I found at hobby craft store Askarelli. My dear sister also drew a beautiful Baptism tree for our baby girl, to which each guest left his/her fingerprint. What a lovely personal memory, don't you think? The godmother of our baby girl had also made cloud-formed cards so that 30 guests could write down & leave wishes for her future. You can find the source of these ideas and more inspiration for a Baptism and/or baby naming ceremony on my Pinterest board here.

Food / Tarjoilut

Concerning the food, we received a lot of help from our family members: two delicious traditional sandwich cakes were made by the mother of my fiancé and the cute Baptism cake with Snork Maiden was made by my dear sister. We are forever grateful for the help we received from them! I made some cake pops and cookies (with the form of clouds, bodies, baby bottles and baby feet). I found the recipe for the cake pops here, and the one for the cookies here.

Wrap up / Yhteenveto

As icing on the cake we brought a photo album with us to the Baptism party. It showcased our baby girl's first month in photos. When we came home, I wrote about the Baptism in our baby girl's baby book that I will present in an upcoming blog post. To finalize the experience, we have now ordered thank you cards that we will send out to the guests.

What makes a perfect Baptism in your opinion? Did we miss something crucial?

Mikä tekee ristiäisistä täydelliset? Puuttuiko mielestäsi juhlastamme jotain?

What's your opinion?
