The story behind the world’s most adorable playhouse

The world is a strange place for a playhouse to stand within it.

The green heart of Helsinki starts at the very beginning of the city's Central Park. Not many know that Helsinki has a Central Park that covers one thousand hectares and is ten kilometers in length. The Helsinki Central Park is an excellent representative of the rich and varied nature in the southern coastal area. And what a grand start to the park the Töölönlahti Bay area is! The area is naturally known for its bay, and the fact that locals often circulate it either jogging or walking. Besides the Kaivopuisto Park, I think it's one of the most popular outdoor areas in the capital. So it's no wonder that I have found myself there also many times during the last four months of my maternity leave. Recently, I visited, for the first time, one of the area's cafés named Café Taideterassi (directly translated: art terrace café) because I was intrigued by its cute neighbor - the Töölönlahti Bay playhouse villa.

Probably the most legendary café in the Töölönlahti Bay area is the one named Sinisen huvilan kahvila (directly translated: the Blue Villa's Café). This adorable café is an outdoor café, so it's open merely in summertime, but when it's open, it offers a wide selection of tasty goodies as well as stunning views over the bay. Café Taideterassi, however, is a relatively new extension to this café. This particular café is actually set partly inside the Blue Villa mentioned in the name of the previous café, and partly outside - facing the beautiful bay. Café Taideterassi stays open a little bit longer ('til the end of September) than the previously mentioned café because this café is partly indoors. As its name implies, it features art both inside & outside. Despite its architectural beauty & verdant natural setting, its real eyecandy is located next door.

Töölönlahden tunnetuin kahvila on luultavasti Sinisen huvilan kahvila. Kyseinen kahvila on osittain sisäkahvila Sinisessä huvilassa, osittain ulkoilma-kahvila sekin. Café Taideterassi pysyy auki vielä syyskuun loppuun asti, vaikka Sinisen huvilan kahvila on jo mennyt tältä kaudelta kiinni. Vaikka sekä Sinisen huvilan kahvila & Café Taideterassi ovat arkkitehtoonisia kaunottaria ja Töölönlahti on todella vaikuttava, alueen todellinen silmäterä löytyy kahviloiden naapurista.

The so called mini villa is a splendid & quite recent addition to the unique villa area nicknamed Linnunlaulu that decorate the Töölönlahti Bay. For many, its captivating story is unknown. The artist couple Marja & Jorma Helenius that live in the Blue Villa from the 1890's have built this smaller & charming villa in the 1990's for their daughter. From the outside, the villa looks like a small castle. Inside, it has many dreamy details: small rooms, a bay window, staircase, tower and attic. You can see a video and lots of photos that show the inside of this breathtaking playhouse here. Since the daugther of the artist family already has grown out of her days of play, the owner couple is now considering different uses for the mini villa. They just might open a children's café there, wouldn't that be just lovely?

Did you ever play in such a house as a child? In your opinion, how does the ideal children's playhouse look like? What makes a playhouse good?

Oliko sinulla leikkimökki pienenä? Miltä mielestäsi näyttää unelmien leikkimökki? Mikä tekee leikkimökistä hyvän?

What's your opinion?

  1. well, I remember we did have some kind of playhouse... nothing fancy though, it didn't have a door so it was open for the wind and stuff. but we (I, my brother and cousins) did play there for some time.
I think it depends how the perfect playhouse should look like. girls like something like you shared in this post and boys like something different, something more masculine maybe.
by the way, wow, your maternity leave already ends. your daughter will go to the nursery then?

    1. No, no, a lot of people now accept that last and past can be used interchangeably. So I just meant in the past four months. I still have the major part of my maternity leave left 😊 I'll return to work next year.
