One month of black

Helsinki, 3 degrees

The perpetual movement of the water, rolling from and to unknown destinations, the voices of the sea shield us from the raging furies and shrieking sounds of dystopian surroundings, creating an unwinding veil for stilled happiness, acquainting us with the gentle, cosmic rhythms of an extraneous world. They are a soothing relief and let us listen to the voices of our inner world.

When my dad passed away in 2013, I felt like wearing black for two and a half weeks. Then I had to start wearing other colors again. Now, when I lost my mother, I have felt like wearing black for at least one whole month. It's a way of respecting, honoring & remembering both of them, I think. After my father's death, I started to avoid all black outfits as they reminded me of what had happened as the color was so strongly linked to that period in my life. Now, I've been walking the streets of Helsinki for 24 days in all black outfits.

The ironical part is that people that don't know me think nothing about it. After all, many swear on the color of black. It's kind of a general protective & safe color of clothing. And I guess most of us are recovering from something. During these past 24 days, especially the past couple of days, I've been noticing people that wear all black outfits. Thinking about why they might be wearing them. I've noticed that this silly habit has given me a sense of comfort and consolation.

Musta värihän on monelle turvaväri.

As I avoided all black outfits for such a long time, I didn't have many black items in my closet when I heard the dreaded news about my mother. This meant that this month I have had to create a completely new wardrobe consisting out of black clothes - a shielding wardrobe for the mourning month of November. In this blog post, I would like to present the cornerstones of this wardrobe. For my mother's funeral, I wore a net birdcage veil and the same simple A line dress that I wore to my father's funeral. You can see the dress in this earlier blog post.

Do you wear all black outfits? For you, is an all black outfit a statement or just an easy option?

Käytätkö itse kokomustia asukokonaisuuksia? Miksi - onko kokomusta sinulle kannanotto vaiko vain turvallinen valinta?

What's your opinion?

  1. It's a way to show that you are grieving and black may pull us to meet our inner feelings about it, for sure. The recommendations are really good and I hope you have a nice weekend with your little cute daughter,
