3 + 1 ideas for creating the perfect Nordic nursery

Helsinki, 20 degrees

In the baby’s room: the city lights are milky, in the curtains…breath. Gentle as rain, sleep, quiet as snowflakes.

As my baby girl's first birthday is approaching, we've made some changes to her nursery as she now spends an increasing amount of time in her room. I must add, though, that during the year I've spent with her at home, we have usually spent either the morning or afternoon in her room, and it has functioned as a play room for her as she has slept in our bedroom. Now, however, for her birthday, we have carefully reflected over what has worked in the room over the year and how we can make the room better - for a toddler. Here are my personal 3 + 1 ideas for how to create the perfect nursery. In less than two weeks time, when my baby girl turns one year old, I'll showcase the ready nursery for you in an upcoming blog post! Most of the interior pieces in my baby girl's nursery are Nordic.

Ensi viikolla saatte sitten nähdä lopputuloksen tulevassa blogikirjoituksessa! Olen pyrkinyt käyttämään lastenhuoneessa mahdollisimman paljon pohjoismaalaisia sisustustuotteita.

Select an overall theme / Valitse yleinen teema

When I started to plan for my baby girl's room, I first selected an overall theme that was gender neutral (hence mainly a combination of baby blue and pink) and dear to us parents, so our girl would get to know us better while spending time in her room. At least until she one day will decide for herself the theme of her room. My baby girl's nursery has a sea theme (a combination of things/sub-themes: under the sea, nautical, maritime, Helsinki, the Baltic Sea).

Tyttöni huoneessa on näin ollen meriteema (yhdistelmä monesta alateemasta: mm. Pieni merenneito, merenkulku, Helsinki, Itämeri).

Start from the ground / Aloita lattiatasolta

After selecting the overall theme, I wanted to combine the sea with the city (as we live in Finland's capital). This contrast was created thanks to my baby girl's carpet that represents the city in her room. We are still missing some pine tree pillows. My baby girl's teepee is currently on our balcony, where it will stay for at least the summer.

Look up at the sky / Nosta katsetta

I also didn't want to forget the third dimension in her room: the sky. I took the inspiration for this level in her room from her curtains that have flying rabbits and clouds on them.

En halunnut olla huomioimatta huoneen kolmatta ulottuvuutta: taivasta. Huoneen korkein taso sai inspiraationsa verhoista, joissa esiintyy lentäviä pupuja ja pilviä.

+ 1 Moomins / Muumit

I don't think any nursery would be perfect without having some Moomins in it. In my baby girl's nursery the Moomin characters appear in the room's decoration: in a house shelf & piggy bank, on seasonal wall art and posters, but also in play: in soft & crib toys, as well as a play lighthouse.

What do you think are the essentials in a Nordic nursery? Are we still missing something crucial?

Mitkä ovat sinun mielestä lastenhuoneen kulmakivet? Puuttuuko mielestäsi jotain oleellista tyttömme huoneesta?

What's your opinion?

  1. such a cute post! :) also super inspirational since you've really worked hard to get that perfect result. what I also like is the fact how many of those items are from thrift shops - that's really awesome and once again super inspirational! oh and I like the sea theme a lot!
