Helsinki City Museum: Ghost Walk Tour

Helsinki, 20 degrees

We're all ghosts. We all carry, inside us, people who came before us.

On a Friday afternoon, I find myself on the third Ghost Walk Tour in my city (I wrote about the last one I went on in this earlier blog post). Why, you might ask. Well, according to me it's fascinating to hear ghost stories about my beloved Helsinki. It reminds us about the people that used to live in this capital city. I think it's important to remember that on the very same streets that we walk today, other people with intruiging life stories have walked on as well. The stories also tell about the society of yesterday as they many times are related to the history, norms and culture of the city. Some of the ghost stories even include a so called lesson and strive to educate the people in some way (some might function as a warning and/or bad example of fate and in that way showcase rules). So I think you can't really say that you know the city well, if you haven't heard any of its ghost stories. A Ghost Walk probably isn't the first tour you take in the city, but for a true Helsinki-lover they're a must-do! Don't worry, most of Helsinki's ghosts are kind and well-intentioned, and there are only a few serial killers haunting the city.

No, koska mielestäni on kiehtovaa kuulla kummitustarinoita kotikaupungistani. Näillä kaikilla on omat mielenkiintoiset elämäntarinansa.

The adventurous Ghost Walk Tour (€10) that I joined in on was organized by the Helsinki City Museum and called "the Parkway Ghosts". It visited the dead returned who still haunt the museum’s vicinity. During the 1½ hour tour I counted that we learned about 10 urban legends. I had heard about two of the ghosts before, but the rest were still new to me! I don't want to spoil the tour for you by telling too much about its content (the tour will run at least all summer, be sure to book it in advance), but from the photos you can see that it took the tour group from the Helsinki City Museum to the Esplanade Park, Swedish Theater, Old Church Park, Alexander Theater and finished at Glo Hotel Art.

Funnily enough, as a former employee at this specific hotel (I used to work there back in 2007), I had personal experience of some of its ghost stories. Needless to say, it felt very creepy to return there to hear more stories, even though the building itself is one of the most beautiful in whole Helsinki.

Don't hesitate to join the tour, as most of the stories are associated with dead owners that want to visit their establishments to check on its current state or unhappy love/deaths. In many stories things move, voices are heard, doors open/shut and human figures appear. However, only a couple of times there has been actual physical proof of the stories, but you'll hear about that during the tour. One can only reflect on it afterwards: if there has been even physical proof of ghosts - why try to deny their existence? The fresh photos of this blog post are mine, but the golden oldies are from the Helsinki City Museum's plentiful image service.
