Fujifilm Instax mini 25: the polaroid wall

Helsinki, 20 degrees

Looking at a photograph and wishing you could relive that moment over and over again.

One of the highlights of my daughter's birthday was for sure the polaroid wall! I got the idea from two different places, actually. We had set up polaroid walls at work related parties before, and they had always been highly successful. However, without a polaroid camera, I could never have realized this idea. So where did I get the camera? You won't believe it, but as far away as from Hong Kong! Let me tell you the story of how it ended up in the great North - in Helsinki!

Yksi tyttäreni syntymäpäiväkohokohdista oli ehdottomasti polaroid -seinä! Sain idean kuvaseinää varten oikeastaan kahdesta eri paikasta. Olin työn merkeissä rakentanut vastaavanlaisia polaroid -seiniä juhlia varten, ja seinät olivat aina aikaisemmin olleet juhlissa suosittuja. En kuitenkaan olisi voinut toteuttaa seinäideaa ilman itse polaroid -kameraa.

The story of this camera started already back in 2015 when one of my good study exchange friends that I met in Italy visited me from Hong Kong on his honeymoon. He used this camera during his stay in Helsinki (he told me it's widely popular in Hong Kong) and told me about his tradition to always take two identical photos of special moments with friends. In this way, he could keep one photo and give the other photo to the other person in the photo. While he was in Helsinki, we took two photos of us during the dinner I had organized for us, and I still carry that photo of us three (me, him & his wife) in my wallet. One of the great features of this camera's photos is that they are pocket-size. What a special memory!

Miten ihana muisto!

As he noticed how excited I got over the camera, he later on surprised me with a package from Hong Kong - he sent me a very own copy of the Fujifilm Instax camera! You can imagine how happily surprised I was. I have long thought about when to use the camera for the first time. It turned out that since the camera was Chinese, it wasn't that easy to find the correct batteries for it in Helsinki. However, after a long search, I was set for my girl's birthday!

I think the polaroid photos are a great memory from my girl's birthday. Of course we took digital photos during the parties as well, but the polaroid photos were, in a sense, more speical. Today, when digital photos are taken all the time, photography has become so easy. Polaroid photos remind us of a time when one had to plan ahead and really think about what photos to take, as they are immediately printed on paper (that you don't want to waste). Photos can not be deleted before printing, so you have to get it right straight away. I think these photos' imperfection is one of their best features - a truly unique feature at a birthday party!

The polaroid photos were all taken at the same place in our home - in front of our girl's room door that had a letter banner saying "Felicia 1" on it. The letter banner is from A Little Lovely Company through MiniOnes (see earlier blog post about it). I arranged the photos in the shape of a heart, and the photos decorated her room door for one month after the parties - what a happy reminder of that special birthday weekend and the people in my daughter's life!

Kaikki polaroid -kuvat otettiin meidän kotona samassa paikassa - tyttäreni huoneen oven edessä. Kuvien taustalla luki ovessa A Little Lovely Company -kirjainnauhasta tehty teksti "Felicia 1". Kirjainnauhan sain MiniOnesilta (esittely tässä blogikirjoituksessa).  Järjestin myöhemmin kuvat sydämen muotoon, ja kuvat koristelivat tyttäreni huoneen ovea kuukauden ajan hänen syntymäpäivän jälkeen - miten iloinen muistutus hänen tärkeästä päivästään ja hänelle tärkeistä ihmisistä!

How do you feel about polaroid cameras? Do you have one? When have you last used one?

Mitä mieltä olet polaroid -kameroista? Omistatko sellaisen? Milloin viimeksi käytit polaroid -kameraa?

What's your opinion?

  1. First, let me say that if it's 20 degrees there, that's where I need to be right now! The heat here in NC is sweltering. I remember using Polaroids back in the 70's and we loved it. The camera was much larger back then. Your pcitures really turned out beautifully! Hugs...RO

    1. Haha, yeah, this summer has continued to be rather mild in Helsinki. When the sun is out, it's about 20-25 degrees, but we have had a lot of rainy days too. Definitely a summer we'll remember!
And yes, polaroids are for sure retro, and old school, but that is one reason why I like them so much! :)

    1. Well, it depends what you consider free. If you want to print the photos, it still costs so it all depends on how you want to keep and store your photos. Seldom something is really free.

  4. I like that heart you created, it's lovely :)
I think somewhere during last year polaroid cameras got pretty popular in Estonia and I do actually have one. mine is called Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 and we used it when our veranda was finished and decorated with a Christmas tree, also when the year changed... we don't use it very often but I'm sure it will change when the baby has arrived :) by the way, my baby's due date is in November but my maternity leave starts a little before the end of August. and the baby belly photoshoot comes right after the maternity leave has started ;)

    1. Thank you Maiken for your kind words. Oh, November! <3 So it's a February baby (maybe winter break?), haha. In my family, we have always had this tradition to think about when the baby got its start. Me and my sister are both born in March, so we are Midsummer babies :) Nice that you have some time to prepare for the baby before it arrives in August-November. You should pamper yourself during that time, and maybe write a letter for the baby!

  5. I would love to have a Polaroid camera, and the story about your friend sounds so cool, giving one picture to the friends and keeping the other. It is a nice tradition, I like it. How cool to receive them from Hong Kong. How fast time flies, your baby is already 1! Congratulations! I loved the idea of the pictures! Hope you have a great weekend!
