Spring in the middle of Helsinki's winter: Markku Keränen's An Everlasting Spring of Colour

Helsinki, -10 degrees

More than a season, spring is a state of mind.

I saw spring yesterday. You might find this comment odd as we have -10 degrees at the moment in Helsinki. However, isn't it wonderful that my city offers the possibility to visit spring even in the midst of winter? Where you might ask. Well, I'll tell you. And spring isn't so far away, anyway, if you ask me. After all, they say that no matter how long winter is, spring is sure to follow.

The wonderful colors of spring can at the moment, for a period of about one month (until April 8), be seen at Kunsthalle Helsinki. Once again, the art museum has managed to host an art exhibition that I urge everyone to visit! The human-centric world of Markku Keränen’s paintings radiates with the joy of colors. The retrospective exhibition portrays the expert touch of Keränen’s egg tempera paintings from the 1970s until present day. Having had the pleasure of hearing Keränen explain his art himself yesterday, I heard him saying that he has had several inspiration sources: the spring & summer light at his summer cottage island in Hailuoto, his childhood village in Finnish Lapland and Italy. I seldom feel full of energy leaving an art exhibition, but this is for sure one that leaves you with a joyous and happy feeling! I found that these kinds of circles, where you could see the movement in them through the hand strokes in the tempera medium, were a symbol of life circles and personally, I thought they were energizing!

Kevään ihania värejä voi ihailla tällä hetkellä noin kuukauden ajan (8.4. asti) Helsingin Taidehallissa. Taas taidemuseo on onnistunut kokoamaan näyttelyn, jota suosittelen kaikille!

At work I had a discussion this week about the fact that the egg form seems to occur in many places in Helsinki. The egg, of course, is a general symbol for new life and beginnings. Also, at Keränen's exhibition, there were at least two connections to eggs - the egg tempera he uses for the paintings (also seen in a video that is showed at the museum), and the form of an egg that appeared in some of his paintings.

Tällä viikolla ympyrät ja varsinkin kananmunat ovat muutenkin olleet puheenaiheena töissä, koska yksi PR-vieraistamme reagoi juttutuoksiomme aikana siihen, että hänen mielestään munan muoto on kovin yleinen Helsingissä. Se löytyy rakennuksista, esineistä ja vaikka mistä! Keräsen näyttelyssä huomasin, ettei sekään ollut poikkeus - näyttelyssä oli kaksi munaviitettä: taiteilijan käyttämä munatempura (värien sideaineena on munankeltuainen) ja munan muoto joissakin hänen teoksissaan.

The only thing I missed at the art exhibition was the possibility to interact with the paintings - it would have been great to able to paint myself after being inspired in such great extent by the artist! At home, I've been obsessed with circles ever since I saw the exhibition.

What kind of art affects you? What do you look for in art exhibitions? How often do you go to art exhibitions? What exhibition has lately inspired you?

Minkälainen taide pysäyttää sinut? Mitä haet taidenäyttelyistä? Miten usein käyt taidenäyttelyissä? Mikä näyttely on viimeksi tehnyt sinuun vaikutuksen?
